11/28 FLORIDA-BUFFALO TRADE: LYON FOR BERNAL
Gehrig Schilling, general manager of the Florida Tarpons has announced a deal in which the Tarpons will acquire 24 year old OF Ernesto Bernal, the Nickels 2nd and 3rd round draft choices in the 2008 amateur draft, and 290,000 in cash. To complete the deal Florida sends 24-year old C prospect Mike Lyon, 21-year old C prospect Issui Takata and top P prospect Juan Portio to Buffalo.

GM'S OFFICE
Trading Portio was painful. He's going to be very good, potential ace material. But that's 3-4 years from now. Bernal is a right-handed hitting outfielder who can seriously win a gold glove at any position out there. He is rated as the leagues fastest and best baserunner. He can work the count, but his bat right now isn't something to get excited about. He was signed by Ohio as an international free agent in 1999 and Buffalo took him in the 2006 rule 5 draft. Portio became part of the deal when the picks came into play. We have no 4th-6th round picks but now we have pick 15, 36, 46 and 54, 67 and 76 in the first 3 rounds. Which means we will have 6 players after 6 rounds anyway and 6 of the top 76 picks overall. It was a very steep price to pay, but the scouts and our draft will make it worth it.
The under the radar piece here is the value in those 6 picks. I could now feasibly trade 3 picks and still have 4 players in the 1st 3 rounds as I have a comp pick in this years 2nd round.
