A very different draft for the Tarpons this year. 5 picks in the 1st two rounds followed by nothing else until the 12th. We leveraged many of our choices in last winters trades.
I didn't know how the OSA was going to rate de Soto but he clearly won't make it to me at 15. Burmeister is a superstar in waiting.
I pick 15th, 38th, 53rd, 59th, and 61st in the first 61 picks. I won't pick again until the 12th.
Austin has this years top pick.
- 1) Austin – Jeremy Burmeister (21) CF 6' 175 L/R superstar written all over him. 5 tool player with off the charts intangibles.
- 2) St Louis – Zach Harding (21) LF 5'9” 160 R/R sparkplug with power. Can fly.
- 3) New York – Juan de Soto (21) SP 6' 180 RHP Ace. Upper 90's with a ++ slider. Great intangibles. By far best arm in the draft
- 4) Oklahoma – Sean Haley (21) SS 5'10” 165 R/R all-around talent with speed. Going to be 2-3 hole hitter who hits for avg. + defender already. Serious questions around his intangibles and work ethic
- 5) Milwaukee – Micah Davis (19) SP 5'10” 175 RHP 1st high schooler off the board. Sits in the upper 90's and can touch 100. Projects to have ++ cutter and split. Questions about the baseball IQ and his 'stature' at 5'10”.
- 6) Buffalo – Tim Terrell (20) SS 6' 185 L/R Big time speed, power combo with exceptional defensive tools.
- 7) Memphis – Ajani Siplin (19) OF 6' 165 L/R All kinds of tools but huge questions around whether he'll ever make enough contact to matter. Great eye, good wheels, and potential + power. Cannon for an arm.
- 8) Portland – Ron Dagle (19) C 6'1” 205 R/R Huge potential out of a HS catcher. ++ power, incredibly mature game caller.
- 9) Phoenix – Chris Russell (21) 3B 6' 185 R/R Safe pick. College bat who runs well, will be a ++ defender and will hit
- 10) Jacksonville – Jared Essick (21) 6'3” 200 L/L low to mid-90's lefty with ++ changeup and developing Curve and split.
- 11) Brooklyn – Steve Mabry (21) 6'3” 185 R/R Likely the guy I would have taken 4 picks from now if he had a 3rd pitch. Upper 90's with great body. Just a 2 pitch guy right now so I don't see anything but a groundball, strikeout reliever. Too early in the draft for that.
- 12) Denver – Jeremy Dolce (21) 1B/3B 6' 185 R/R Well above avg 1B but can play some 3B and OF. More 3 or 5 hole guy. Likely 20 HR 40 2B guy if he pans out as expected.
- 13) San Diego – Chris Linn (21) RF 6'2” 185 Younger brother of our 1st pick in 2005, Joe Linn. Big bat, big power and a good defender already.
- 14) San Antonio – Freddie Garner (21) SP 6'1” 190 R/R Upper 90's with 5 pitches. He underwent surgery in March and will be out until September
- 15) Florida – Andy Elizondo (21) LF 6' 180 R/R Outstanding college bat that's likely to move quick. Likely play left but has a good arm and some RF potential.
- 2nd round 7th pick Jimmy Helms (21) C 6' 190 L/R thought he'd be long gone. Big time bat but a long way to go behind the plate. Potential to be a 3,4 or 5 hitter.
- 2nd round 22nd pick Josh Thompson (21) 6' 180 LHP Upper 90's lefty with some potential to front a rotation. Has to outdo his control expectations but he's a legit triple digit arm
- 2nd round 28th pick Danny Sharp (21) 6'2” 190 SS R/R Most had him moving to CF but he is already a very good SS. Blazing speed, huge arm, insane defensive tools and a potential 2 hole, or leadoff bat.
- 2nd round 30th pick Camden Mouland (21) 6'3” 200 LF L/L College power bat, ++ power, good defend
er in left.
