TARPONS ACQUIRE BURSEY IN BLOCKBUSTER WITH COWBOYS
A blockbuster in every sense of the word was announced at the 11th hour on the trading deadline. Florida has sent top pitching prospect Kinnon Mendelson, top IF prospect Juan Guerra, knuckleballer Robbie Givens, CF Serge Baud and 25-year-old top C prospect Vince Rydell, AND their 2nd and 4th round pick to the Texas Cowboys for a package of players.
The centerpiece is star Centerfielder Leith Bursey. The 23-year-old is considered by many to be a close 2nd in talent to Sergio Robles as the games best CF. He is hitting .332-9-55 as of today. Also coming to Florida is top OF prospect Chris Linn, OF Jake Inks and 24 year old IF Arturo Oquendo.
Bursey is making league minimum and arbitration eligible this winter.
GM'S OFFICE
Flying in the face of everything I've ever done in the past. This deal was about acquiring a 23-year-old hall of fame caliber CF who can rake, and win gold gloves. He's both in our scout's eyes. He is honestly one of the 2-3 best outfielders in the game, regardless of position, defensively. His bat is middle of the order vs RHP (Oh ya, he's a switch hitter who gives a little vs LHP but not a troublesome amount) and a gold glove defender. He was the games 26th rated prospect heading into 2008. He broke his finger in May and is just back off the DL.
Linn is the younger brother of Joe Linn, the pitcher we selected 1st overall. He was the San Diego Missions 1st rounder (13th overall) in 2008 out of UCLA. He's a RHH left fielder who can play CF as well/ He's heading to A ball for the remainder of this year. His upside is a 40+ homer bat and a .380+ OBP approach loaded with baseball IQ.
Jake Inks was Texas' 3rd rounder in 2008 out of Duke (78th overall). Our guys are far higher on him than the league. A great year would be 5 HR's but he is going to hit and hit a lot. He's a possible extra/utility guy with 70 steal speed and smarts. He's going to finish this year in Farmington.
Oquendo is a versatile ++ defender all around the IF who we think can hit enough to be a 5th infielder with exceptional tools.
Now to justify what I gave up.The league ratings dropped us from 4th to 13th after this deal. I can't “justify” giving up Mendelson only to say there is no deal if he's not included. I just traded for a 23-year-old franchise cornerstone and that comes with a price. I have a lot of minor league pitching but I'd be lying if I said anyone with his potential right now.
Guerra was, is, one of the games top young IF prospects. He's a 3B and that means Daig, Hallamore, and Mendoza are in line in front of him.
Givens needs a new home. He's an 'old' prospect now and they wanted him.
Baud was a natural to cover the contract incoming as well as to provide Texas with a natural CF to take over. The two picks will hurt, but again there's always a price to pay for star talent. I have stacked this organization with catching prospects as well as the singing of Funicello this winter. I knew they wanted a C prospect as they are desperately thin in the minors at this spot. So before he even asked I took a look at my assets and went with moving the oldest, in Rydell. He's having a fantastic season but his bat is far ahead of his glove and game calling.
The other significant factor in this deal are these two numbers. .687 and 8th. Our current defensive efficiency and our league ranking.
