June 14th-June 20th
June 14th, 2027: I signed 4th Rounder Josh Lucas to a $250,000 signing bonus.
Down in New Orleans, Palban Gamboa earned more hardware, winning American Confrence Player of the Week. He hit .458 with 2 homers and 6 RBI's. The slugging right fielder is hitting .329/.388/.671 with 11 homers and 38 RBI's, and is pushing for a callup later in the season.
Now 39-24, we dropped one spot to 4th in the Power Rankings.
With the Brewers in town, Ignacio Hinojos (2-0, 3.77 ERA, 1.24 WHIP) pitched in front of a sold out crowd against the youngster Rodolfo Espinoza (4-0, 2.01 ERA, 0.81 WHIP) who's making his 2nd start of the season. We didn't defend home turf, and we were topped 6-2.
Matt Hogan left with back tightness, and will be day-to-day for 5 days.
Hinojos went 4.2 innings with 5 hits, 2 runs (1 earned), 3 walks, and 11 strikeouts. 11! Hogan allowed 3 hits and 2 runs in an inning with a walk and a strikeout. Riley Ferrell couldn't get an out, and allowed 2 hits, 2 runs, and a walk. Cho-yeong Hyoun tossed 2 innings with a walk and 4 strikeouts.
Daylen Lile was 3-for-4 with a walk. Chris Reid was 1-for-4 with a double. Isaac Nunez was 1-for-3 with a double and sac-fly. Mac Horvath was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Jarred Kelenic was 1-for-4 with a walk and run scored. Jake Taylor was 1-for-3 with a sac-fly.
I optioend Hogan to AAA, and purchased the contract of the red-hot Palban Gamboa.
Blue Jays 1B Greyson Jenista was 5-for-6 in a 9-7 win over the White Sox.
June 15th, 2027: We looked to even the series back up with Jake Florence (5-4, 3.26 ERA, 1.22 WHIP) taking on Blake Bivens (5-2, 2.76 ERA, 1.26 WHIP). Today, we have the position advantage at all spots in the order (all, but 1 yesterday), but we still lost 4-1...
Florence went 5 with 6 hits, 4 runs, 3 walks, and 5 strikeouts. The pen combined for 4 innings with a hit, 2 walks, and 2 strikeouts.
Isaac Nunez was 1-for-3 with a walk, run scored, and steal. Thomas Dillard was 1-for-4 with a double. Daylen Lile was 1-for-4 with a double and RBI.
Braves SP Ken Harty tossed a 6-hit shutout in a 9-0 win over the Padres. He struck out 6 and walked 1. Blue Jays CF Ron Burk's hit streak was ended at 21 in a 5-4 win over the White Sox.
June 16th, 2027: Tylor Megill will beging a rehab assignment in AAA.
Yankees RHP Nick Pogue is out for the eyar wtih a damaged elbow ligament. The 27-year-old was 3-2 with a 3.44 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 34 innings.
We looked to avoid the sweep with Steve Paustian (5-4, 3.78 ERA, 1.32 WHIP) taking on Alfredo Rivera (5-3, 5.17 ERA, 1.29 WHIP). Thankfully, I didn't have to deal with getting swept at home, and a five run first was enough for the 6-2 win.
Paustian went 6.2 innings with 4 hits, 2 runs, 2 walks, and 11 strikeouts. Jared Taylor and Luis Alcantra combined for 2.1 innings with a hit and 2 strikeouts a piece.
Isaac Nunez was 2-for-5 with a solo homer. Thomas Dillard was 1-for-4 with a run scored and steal. Jarred Kelenic was 1-for-2 with 2 walks and a run scored. Juan Ramirez was 1-for-3 with a walk, run scored, and RBI. Paustian was 1-for-3 with 2 RBI's.
Tomorrow is an off day before the Cardinals come to town.
June 17th, 2027: Athletics 3B Ryan Vilade hit thre homers in a 9-7 win over the Yankees. Twins 1B Lucius Fox was 5-for-5 as they edged the Phillies 11-10.
The Cardinals come to town for three, and we'll see Ben O'Neill (0-1, 9.72 ERA), Logan Gilbert (6-4, 3.58 ERA), and Eric Webster (2-3, 3.91 ERA).
June 18th, 2027: The Padres sent RHP Chris Rodriguez to the Giants for RHP Juan Trejo and RHP Sam Orellana. I like this deal for the Giants.
The Nationals sent 1B Anderson Franco to the Rays for RHP Jose Almonte and 3B Shamel LeSane. I love this deal for the Rays.
We opened the series hosting the Cardinals with Luis Ardon (5-2, 2.70 ERA, 1.14 WHIP) facing Ben O'Neill (0-1, 9.72 ERA, 1.80 WHIP) in a must-win opener. We have the better player nearly everywhere on the field, but we still lose 4-2 as we've had a rough stretch as of late.
Ardon went 5.1 innings with 7 htis, 3 runs, 2 walks, and 7 strikeouts. Luis Alcantra allowed a run off 2 hits in 2 innings with 2 strikeouts.
Thomas Dillard was 3-for-4 with a double, run scored, and RBI. Daylen Lile was 1-for-5 with a run scored and his league leading 18th steal. Isaac Nunez was 1-for-4 with a double. Chris Reid was 2-for-3 with a walk. Jhon Solarte was 1-for-4 with an RBI.
Indians 1B Anthony Rizzo hit his 400th career homer. He got his 2,000th career hit not to long ago, but at 37, he's really struggled, hitting .193/.261/.337 with 7 homers and 23 RBI's. This will liekly be his first negative WAR season since 2011.
June 19th, 2027: We looked to even the series back up with Devon Peterson (6-4, 5.58 ERA, 1.59 WHIP) taking on Logan Gilvert (6-4, 3.58 ERA, 1.19 WHIP). We have the advantage in every opsition today, but I doubt it will do us much good. I was partially wrong, and we won 4-2 to at least avoid getting swept at home.
Peterson looked great, 6 innings with 1 hit, 1 run, 2 walks, and 7 strikeouts. Ernesto Estrella and Riley Ferrell earned holds before Alpha Quivers got the save. Quivers allowed a solo homer in the 9th.
Eric Kisela was 2-for-3 with 2 doubles, a run scored, RBI, and hit by pitch. Thomas Dillard was 2-for-3 with a run scored, walk, and steal. Daylen Lile was 2-for-4. Isaac Nunez was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Jarred Kelenic was 1-for-3 with a walk and run scored. Deshawn Hardamon was 1-for-3 with an RBI.
More milestone homers today: Red Sox 1B Cody Bellinger hit his 500th and his teammate 1B Rhys Hoskins hit his 400th. I don't think teammates have ever hit milestone homers on the same day.
June 20th, 2027: Fan vote update: Dillard 2nd. Kelenic 2nd. Quivers 2nd.
Palban Gamboa made his debut in the series finale between Ignacio Hinojos (2-1, 3.60 ERA, 1.28 WHIP) and Eric Webster (2-3, 3.91 ERA, 1.55 WHIP). Former Marlin Rodolfo Medrano hit a solo homer in the 1st, but luckily that's the only hit and run the Cardinals would get, and we won the finale 6-1.
Hinojos went 6 innings with just the 1 hit and run to go with 10 strikeouts and 3 walks. He's struck out 84 in 56 innings. The pen tossed 3 innings with a walk and 5 strikeouts.
Daylen Lile was 2-for-5 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI's. Mac Horvath was 2-for-4 with a doubel and 2 runs scored. Chris Reid was 1-for-3 with a run scored, RBI, and walk. Gamboa was 1-for-3 with a walk and RBI in his debut. Thomas Dillard was 1-for-3 with a hit by pitch and run scored. Isaac Nunez was 1-for-3 with a run scored and sac-fly.
We're off to Arizona for three with the Diamondbacks as we start a 7 game road trip before an off day. We'll see Zach Linginfelter (3-5, 4.56 ERA), Steven Gingery (5-5, 4.72 ERA) and the breakout Jean-Christophe Hernandez (7-1, 2.00 ERA).
But first, with the GCL season starting tomorrow, I went to cut my GCL roster from 70 to 40.
I made a few trades, the first a normal one, sending four prospects to the Red Sox for C Esteban Moreno.
Next, I did something different. I sent prospects to some of the unaffiliated minor league teams (the ones preparing for expansion) to give them some young draftees to add to the system.
I sent five youngsters to the Clinton Pilots for someone who I wanted to draft years ago, SS C.J. Abrams. I sent five more guys to the Winnipeg Goldeyes for RHP Rusty Schilling. I then acquired former draftee Jonathan Gettys from the Albany Senators for five prospects. I'll try to pick different teams next year to spread the wealth.
