July 5th, 1986
Today the Cardinals are pitching Mike Schooler (4-3, 4.69).
The Giants are pitching Terry Mulholland (7-6, 3.69).
I am 0 for 2 vs Schooler.
I got the 3rd out of the 1st, snagging a liner by Andy Van Slyke.
I then led off the bottom half by dropping one into shallow right on the first pitch for a single. Then came stolen base #62 AND 63. I scored on a Robby Thompson sac fly.
Giants lead 1-0.
The Cards evened it up in the 2nd when Oddibe McDowell scored from 2nd on a Bruce Bochte double. Then they got the lead when Bochte moved to 3rd on a passed ball and scored on a Bill Almon ground out.
Cardinals lead 2-1.
I got the 1st out in the 3rd, handling a Vince Coleman grounder. Lee Mazzilli dropped what should have been the 3rd out and Van Slyke scored. I grabbed an Almon grounder with the bases loaded to end it.
Cardinals lead 3-1.
I led off the bottom of the 3rd by grounding out to Bochte at 1st.
In the 4th Mike Aldrete scored on a Mazzilli single and then Mazzilli scored on a Mulholland single to tie the game! I came up with Scott Bradley on 2nd and Terry on 1st and I walked, loading the bases. Robby grounded out, leaving us all there.
Game tied 3-3.
St.Louis took the lead right back in the 5th as Van Slyke scored on a Mark Salas sac fly.
Cardinals lead 4-3.
Frank Williams came in to pitch for us in the 6th. I made a great play, fielding a tough grounder by Schooler for the 3rd out.
I came up with two out in the bottom half and I flew out to McDowell in centre.
After Frank gets the next three in order it is noted that he has recorded six outs on seven pitches. He ends up pitching four nearly perfect frames (marred only by an error), using 29 pitches.
I came up in the 9th with Scott Bradley, representing the tying run, standing on 1st, one out, and Todd Worrell pitching. I singled into right and Scott moved to 3rd. Robby then singled, scoring Scott to tie the game! Mark Clear took over for Worrell and I ran on him, grabbing stolen base #64. With two out Rob Deer singled and I crossed for the walk-off win!
We took it 5-4!
I went 2 for 4 with two singles, a walk, two runs scored, three stolen bases, and a great day!
We have won three in a row and are sitting two games behind the Dodgers and 1.5 behind the Reds.
Oh my. Chris Brown has a torn meniscus. Poor Chris. That is the rest of the year for him.
Brad Wellman is called back up.
I can't think how lucky I am to not have had an injury.
