With the game still scoreless, the Cardinals had runners at first and second in the bottom of the ninth but Shannon grounded to short and it is on to extra innings.

The Cardinals got a man on with one out in the bottom of the tenth but Pfiester struck out pinch hitter Pug Bennett and Kling caught Hoelskoetter stealing second for the inning ending strike em out throw em out double play.
In the top of the eleventh, with runners at the corners, the Cubs tried the squeeze play but Steinfeldt missed the bunt and Sheckard was thrown out at home.
In the bottom of the eleventh, Kling threw out Burch at second for his 20th caught base stealer of the season.
Grady led off the bottom of the twelfth with a double to set a NL record for an extra inning game with three. The Cardinals would go on to load the bases with one out. Hoelskoetter grounded to first and Grady was forced at home for the second out. Ed Holly then singled to end the game.
