April 8th-April 13th
April 8th, 2030: I claimed CF Juan Alarcon off waivers from the Colorado Rockies and optioned him to Aa.
Alarcon, 22, is a 1.5/3.5* speedster who's an elite defender in center with a raw, but developing bat. He's never played above A+.
I recalled C Pat Hughes from New Orleans to replace the hurt Miller.
The first Power Rankings placed us 13th, but we've played like 20th at best...
But that means it's time for the first full year of "Prospect Watch" where I highlight certain players in the organization.
Prospect Watch: LF Chi-yong Kym (MLB Miami): Since most of the minors hasn barely played or haven't started, the first watch of the season goes to Chi-yong Kym, who finds himself a big leaguer with all the outfield injuries. The 23-year-old nicknamed "Hodge Podge" came over from the Tigers for Bikichi Tsukamoto, who we acquired that same day from the Nationals. Kym is rated a 4* prospect and checks in at #4 in the system. A great defender and baserunner, Kym has great range in left and can run down balls in the alleys. What he lacks is an arm, which prevents him from really playing right field. He's got plus-plus contact, a lot of gap power, and he rarely strikes out. He's just 3-for-18 with a RBI and walk in the majors this year, but with more seasoning in the minors once Ramirez or Simental get healthy, Kym will develop into a quality regular with All-Star potential.
The Brewers were in town for three, with C.J. Jorgensen (0-0, 0.00 ERA, 1.41 WHIP) taking on Victor Mederos (1-0, 3.18 ERA, 1.41 WHIP). The Brewers got 6 in the 5th to take the opener 9-4.
Unearned runs killed us today, and just 2 of the 8 runs were earned...
Jorgensen went 5 with 4 hits, 6 runs (2 earned), a walk, and 6 strikeouts. C.J. LaFever pitched the 9th, allowing 2 hits, 2 walks, and 3 unearned runs with a strikeout.
Recently featured Chi-yong Kym was 1-for-4 with a double, run scored, and RBI. Ernie Frye was 2-for-4 with a run scored and steal. Gregorio Alvarenga was 1-for-4 with a triple. Fernando Tatis Jr. was 1-for-4 with a run scored, but was charged with an error that cost us 4 runs. Despite his 71 rating at 3B and 73 error rating, he has made 3 already, and has barley hit...
April 9th, 2030: Juan Ramirez is headed to AAA to begin a rehab assignment, where I'll be giving him reps in right. I haven't been taking advantage of his 80 rated arm there, and he has very little experience anywhere except left. He'll return to left in the majors, but I'm working on increasing his versatility.
What we need more increasing is our run total, where Pat Saitta (0-1, 19.64 ERA, 2.73 WHIP) looks to start over against Rawley Hector (0-0, 3.00 ERA, 1.50 WHIP). Saitta looked terrible, and after 2 innigns we were down 8-0. Somehow, we managed to tie up the game and force extras. Sadly, Steve Paustian needed to come out of the pen, and we lost 12-8 in 14 innings...
Saitta went 3 innigns with 6 hits, 8 runs, 2 walks, and 5 strikeouts. Steve Hudson tossed 2 innings with 3 hits and 3 strikeouts. Paustian tossed 4 innings with 3 hits, 4 runs, 6 walks, and 4 strikeouts, but most of the damage was in his 4th inning of work...
Rogelio Maldonado was 2-for-4 with a walk and two, two run homers. Jon Reid was 2-for-6 with a walk and solo homer. Mac Horvath was 1-for-6 with a run scored and sac-fly. Fernando Tatis Jr. was 1-for-5 with a run scored, walk, and hit by pitch. Pat Hughes was 1-for-4 with a run scored, RBI, and 2 walks.
Rays RF Tim Green was 5-for-5 in a 12-5 win over the Bo Sox.
April 10th, 2030: I claimed Sam Scruggs of waivers just for the purpose of giving him tomorrow's start in place of Paustian. He'd be DFA'd directly after the game, but I needed a quick arm. I could have called someone up from New Orleans, considering their season doesn't start till tomorrow, but I thought this would be easier.
The Nationals lost LHP Mike Abrams for the year with a torn rotator cuff.
We looked to avoid the sweep with Devon Peterosn (0-1, 15.75 ERA, 2.25 WHIP) taking on Charlie Neeper (1-0, 9.00 ERA, 2.00 WHIP). We were able to walk-it off in the 9th to avoid the sweep with a 8-7 win.
Peterson went 5 with 7 hits, 4 runs, 2 walks, and 6 strikeouts. Joe Kramer struggled, a hit and 2 walks wih 2 runs. Steve Hudson allowed a hit, run, and walk, in 0.1 innings. Chad Scoles got the win, allowing a hit and walk with 2 strikeouts in the 9th.
Ernie Frye was 3-for-5 with a double and RBI. Omari Tetteh was 2-for-5 with 2 doubles, 2 runs, and an RBI. Joey Bart was 2-for-5 with 2 run sscored. Mac Horvath was 1-for-2 with 2 runs, a RBI, a steal, and 3 walks. Fernando Tatis Jr. was 1-for-4 with a walk, double, and run scored. Rogelio Maldonado was 1-for-4 with an RBI and walk. Ken Adeniran was 1-for-1 with an RBI.
I changed my mine, and sent Scruggs through waivers. I'll callup Juan Maya to make the star tomorrow in Cincinatti, where we'll see Eric Walker (0-1, 11.25 ERA), Esteban Aguirre (2-0, 2.70 ERA), and Mike Kuhns (1-1, 4.00 ERA).
April 11th, 2030: The Cubs will be without Amari Ifill for the year with a torn UCL. The Brewers will be without young CL Luis Yebra for the season with a damaged elbow ligament.
I "optioned" Pat Saitta to AAA to recall Juan Maya for today's start. Maya took on Eric Walker (0-1, 11.25 ERA, 2.50 WHIP) in the opener at Great American Ball Park. We have the position advantage at every position today! And it actually helped today, with a 7-5 win to even our record at 5-5!
Maya went 3.2 innings with 6 hits, 2 runs, 3 walks, and 2 strikeouts. Ken Adeniran got the win, 2.2 innings with 4 hits, 2 runs, 2 walks, and a strikeout. Joe Kramer earned the save, 2.2 innigns with a hit, run, 2 walks, and a strikeout.
Ernie Frye was 2-for-5 with 2 runs and 2 RBI's. Mac Horvath was 2-for-5 with a homer and 3 RBI's. Gregorio Alvarenga was 2-for-5 with a run scored, RBI, and double. Jon Reid was 2-for-4 with a walk. Rogelio Maldonado was 1-for-3 with a double, walk, and run scored. Adeniran was 1-for-1 with a run scored.
Maya went back down to AAA, with Saitta coming back up.
Giants SS Daylen Reyes was 5-for-5 in a 9-1 win over the Brewers. A 1st Round pick way back in 2023 by the Astros out of UCLA, the Rookie is finally making the majors at 28 after being selected in the Rule-5 Draft.
April 12th, 2030: The Senators will be without RHP Jose Rodulfo for the year after he ruptured his ulnar colalteral ligament. He tossed 2.1 innings with 3 hits, a run, walk, and strikeout.
We looked to break .500 with Dursun Erbakan (0-0, 3.97 ERA, 1.32 WHIP) facing Esteban Aguirre (2-0, 2.70 ERA, 0.82 WHIP) in a high profile pitching matchup. It was a pretty solid game all-around, and we won 6-3.
Erbakan went 6 innings with 4 hits, 2 runs, and 7 strikeouts. Luis Alcantra and Juan Toribio got holds and C.J. LaFever got a 2 inning save. He walked 1 and struck out 3.
Pat Hughes was 2-for-3 with 2 runs, 2 RBI's, a walk, double, and his first big league homer. Omari Tetteh was 2-for-4 with 2 runs and a solo homer. Jon Reid was 2-for-4 with a run scored and RBI. Mac Horvath was 1-for-4 with a double and walk.
April 13th, 2030: Oakland will miss SP Ben Jordan for the year with a torn ulnar collateral ligament. He was 1-1 with a 7.04 ERA in his 2 starts this year.
Sam Scruggs cleared waivers and was outrighted to AA.
We looked to finish our first sweep of the year with C.J. Jorgensen (0-1, 1.69 ERA, 1.22 WHIP) taking on Mike Kuhns (1-1, 4.00 ERA, 1.33 WHIP). We attempted a late inning comeback, but fell short in a 6-5 loss.
Jorgensen went 6 with 9 hits, 5 runs (4 earned...), a walk, and 3 strikeouts. Shiro Hiraki allowed 2 hits and a run with a strikeout in an inning.
Ernie Frye went 3-for-5 with a run scored to push his average up to .415. Mac Horvath was 2-for-4 with a triple, run scored, walk, and 2 RBI's. Jon Reid was 2-for-5 with an RBI. Gregorio Alvarenga was 1-for-4 with a walk and run scored.
Padres starter Josh Ferland tossed a 3-hit shutout in a 7-0 win over the Mets. The 25-year-old struck out 6.
We get our first off day of the year tomorrow, which will hopefully get us back on track...
