April 14th-April 20th
April 14th, 2030: We get today off before heading to Atlanta for a three game series with the first place Braves. We'll face Juan Ochoa (1-1, 6.30 ERA), Garrison Bryant (1-0, 2.45 ERA), and Pat Vaughan (1-0, 1.50 ERA).
April 15th, 2030: Josh Brown finally signed, so we'll recieve our 4th compensation pick in what better be a strong draft class... He grabbed a 1-year, $14.5 million deal, an affordable rate for a 5* reliever (he was just a 4* with me...).
Another reliever, Cuban righty Juan Contreras, signed a 1-year, $4,320,000 deal with the Tigers to start his big league career.
We rank an impressive 22nd in the Power Rankings. At 6-6, we are just 2 games behind the 8-4 Braves who host us today.
Prospect Watch: RHP Jamie Pearson (A Greensboro):
Just 2 starts in, Jamie Pearson has looked absolutely dominate, working 12.1 innings with a 1.46 ERA, 0.57 WHIP and 14 strikeouts to just 1 walk. He's got eltie stamina, plus control, and five average or better pitches. The 24-year-old signed in August last year after the Natoinals cut him around the draft. Formerly their 5th Round Pick in 2027 out of Notre Dame, Pearson excelled in limited action last year a level lower in Batavia, going 2-0 with a 2.49 ERA and 1.15 WHIP. While he's not the most exciting prospect out there, he's a great teammate that does enough things right that he could be an interesting trade piece or depth option in the higher levels.
I sent Rodolfo Solorzano on rehab to New Orleans, recalled Juan Ramirez, and optioned Chi-yong Kym.
Ramirez made his season debut in left and in the cleanup spot with Pat Saitta (0-1, 21.60 ERA, 2.70 WHIP) looking to turn around this nightmarish start against Juan Ochoa (1-1, 6.30 ERA, 1.60 WHIP). He looked great, and we edged the hosts 2-1.
Juan Toribio left with a sore back, and will hit the DL for likely the minimum. He tossed 0.1 innings with a walk and strikeout while earning his 3rd hold.
Saitta looked great, 6 innings with 4 hits, 1 run, 3 walks, and 3 strikeotus. C.J. LaFever, Toribio, Joe Kramer, and Luis Alcantra earned holds with Chad Scoles recording the save.
Fernando Tatis Jr. was 2-for-3 with a double, 2 runs, a solo homer, and walk. Ernie Frye was 1-for-3 with a walk, RBI, and steal. Saitta was 1-for-2. Noah Smith was 1-for-4.
Phillies 2B Masyn Winn was 5-for-5 in a 9-8 victory over the Cardinals.
April 16th, 2030: I recalled LHP Sam Stewart from AAA New Orleans.
Another starter having a rough start Devon Peterson (0-1, 11.00 ERA, 2.00 WHIP) looked to right the ship against Garrison Bryant (1-0, 2.45 ERA, 0.91 WHIP). We got three quick runs in the top of the first to take the middle game 5-2.
Peterson left with a sore thumb, but luckily won't miss a start. He tossed just 1 inning with a walk before exiting.
Steve Hudson had to come in during the second, tossing 3.2 innings with 3 hits, 2 runs, 2 walks, and a strikeout. Shiro Hiraki tossed 1.1 innings with a hit and strikeout to get a hold. Luis Alcantra and C.J. LaFever tossed an inning a piece for holds before Chad Scoles got the save in the 9th.
Mac Horvath was 2-for-3 with a walk and RBI. Fernando Tatis Jr. was 2-for-5 with a run scored. Sergio Tello was 2-for-4 with 2 RBI's. Joey Bart was 1-for-4 with a double and run scored. Parker Meadows came off the bench and was 1-for-1 with an RBI.
April 17th, 2030: Now tied for first with Atlanta and New York, we looked to sweep the Braves with Steve Paustian (1-1, 3.27 ERA, 1.27 WHIP) facing Ken Harty (0-1, 5.63 ERA, 1.25 WHIP). We weren't able to finish, and the Braves salvaged the finale with a 7-4 victory.
Paustian went 5 innings with 7 hits, 3 runs, 3 walks, and 4 strikeouts. Joe Kramer was roughed up for 2 hits, 3 runs, and a walk while getting a strikeout. Hiraki allowed a hit and run with a strikeout in an inning.
Ernie Frye was 3-for-5 with 2 runs and an RBI. Fernando Tatis Jr. was 3-for-5 with a triple and run scored. Juan Ramirez was 2-for-4 with 2 doubles, a run scored, and RBI. Omari Tetteh was 2-for-4 with a double and 2 RBI's. Joey Bart came off the bench and was 1-for-1 with a walk.
We head back home for three with the Padres. We'll face Cory Abbott (0-0, 3.75 ERA), Josh Ferland (1-1, 2.08 ERA), and Connor Van Scoyoc (0-1, 7.59 ERA).
April 18th, 2030: I activated Jackson Miller from the DL and optioned Pat Hughes to AAA.
The Padres were in town as Dursun Erbakan (1-0, 3.63 ERA, 1.10 WHIP) hosted Cory Abbott (0-0, 3.75 ERA, 1.17 WHIP). It took 11 innings to determine a winner, but Jon Ried drove in Jackson Miller with a single to help us walk-off 9-8 winners.
Erbakan was hit hard, 3 innings with 6 hits, 6 runs, 4 walks, and 7 strikeouts. Joe Kramer contineud his struggles, 2 innings with 2 hits, 2 runs, a walk, and strikeout. The rest of the pen was solid, combining for 6 innings with 2 hits, a walk, and 6 strikeouts.
Ernie Frye raised his average to .448, going 3-for-5 with 2 runs sscored. Juan Rmairez was 2-for-5 with 2 doubles, a run scored, and 3 RBI's. Jackson Miller was 2-for-5 with 2 doubles, 2 runs, and an RBI. Rogelio Maldonado was 2-for-4 with 2 doubles, a walk, and RBI. Jon Reid was 2-for-6 with an RBI. Sergio Tello was 1-for-4 with a three run homer.
Mets 3B Juan Pulido increased his hit streak to 20 games. Blue Jays starter Brendan McKay tossed a 2-hit shutou tin a 4-0 win over the Rangers. He walked 1 and struck out 6.
April 19th, 2030: Juan Simental will start rehab in New Orleans.
Former Marlin Sanshiro Onuma will not return this season. The Blue Jay lefty tore his ulnar collateral ligament. He was 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA in 6 innings with 4 walks and just 2 strikeouts.
C.J. Jorgensen (0-2, 3.24 ERA, 1.38 WHIP) took on Josh Ferland (1-1, 2.08 ERA, 0.92 WHIP) as we looked to win in regulation. We had just 1 hit, but somehow, we came out on top 1-0 winners.
Jorgensen was near perfect, although so was Ferland. C.J. tossed 8 innings with 3 hits, a walk, and 7 strikeouts. Chad Scoles struck out 2 in a perfect 9th to earn the save.
Gregorio Alvarenga was 1-for-3 with aour only hit. Rogelio Maldonado was 0-for-1 with a walk and run scored. Fernando Tatis Jr. was 0-for-2 with a walk and RBI.
Montreal snapped Pulido's hit streak as 20.
April 20th, 2030: The Angels acquired 1B Jamie Bennett from the Mariners for RHP Juan Mercedes and RF Ernesto Flores. It's an even enough deal.
We looked to finish the sweep with Pat Saitta (1-1, 12.08 ERA, 1.97 WHIP) facing Connor Van Scoyoc (0-1, 7.59 ERA, 1.78 WHIP). We had a lot more runs and hits then last game, and we took the finale 8-5.
Saitta pitched fine, 5.2 innings with 6 hits, 2 runs, a walk, and 5 strikeouts. Luis Alcantra allowed 2 runs in 0.2 innings with a hit and strikeout. Joe Kramer got the win, 1.1 innings with ah it, run, and 2 strikeouts. C.J. LaFever got the save, an inning with a strikeout.
Jackson Miller was 2-for-3 with a three run homer, walk, and 2 steals. Mac Horvath was 2-for-4 with a run scored, double, and 4 RBI's. Gregorio Alvarenga was 1-for-4 with 2 runs, 2 steals, and a walk. Juan Ramirez was 1-for-1 with 2 runs, 2 walks, an RBI, double, and hit by pitch. All his hits this season have been doubles. Fernando Tatis Jr. was 1-for-5 with a double and run scored.
Sadly, we have to leave home and head to Washington for three with the Nationals. We'll face Clint Hinshaw (0-1, 3.50 ERA), Steve Vincent (2-1, 4.12 ERA), and Chris Dorman (1-2, 4.18 ERA).
