April 21st-April 26th
April 21st, 2030: The Cubs signed South Korean righty In-Gu Kym to a 1-year, $11.8 million deal.
I optioned Rogelio Maldonado to AAA and recalled Rodolgo Solorzano to make his big league debut.
We opened the series in our nation's capital with Devon Peterson (0-1, 9.90 ERA, 1.90 WHIP) aking on Clint Hinshaw (0-1, 3.50 ERA, 1.33 WHIP). The bats came to play, and we toppled the Nats 9-3.
Peterson tossed 6 innings with 5 hits and 4 walks, but allowed just 1 run with 4 strikeouts. Steve Hudson went 2 innings with 4 hits, 2 runs, a walk, and 2 strikeouts.
Sergio Tello was an absolute animal, 2-for-3 with a walk, hit by pitch, two run homer, and grand slam. He almost doubled his RBI total on the year (7 before today) and now has the team lead (Horvath has 12). Jackson Miller was 2-for-5 with 2 runs and an RBI. Ernie Frye was 2-for-4 with a hit by pitch and RBI. Juan Ramirez was 1-for-4 with a walk. Noah Smith was 1-for-4 with a triple, 3 runs, and walk. Hudson was 1-for-2 with an RBI double.
April 22nd, 2030: We jumped all the way up to 3rd in the Power Rankings. At 12-7, we have a 1 game lead over the Mets.
Prospect Watch: LHP Ethan Pistner (AA Jacksonville):
Acquired at the deadline last year with Dursun Erbakan from the Phillies, Ethan Pistner has been worked almost exculsively as a starter in the Marlins organization, despite being profiled by many as a reliever in the big leagues. He's started well in 2 starts for Jacksonville, going 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA and 1.08 WHIP in 12 innings. Formlery the 12th Overall Pick in 2026, Pistner has slowly seen his prospect status draft, and he ranks outside the Top 30. A durable arm, Pistner features a plus-plus fastball that can graze triple digits with a plus-plus splitter. His problem is he lacks a quality third pitch (below-average curveball and awful changeup) and doesn't quite have starter stamina. He gets plus movement on his pitches, but is still mastering his control. Whether he ends up a starter or reliever, the lefty will find himself a spot on a big league roster.
We looked to keep rolling with Steve Paustian (1-2, 3.94 ERA, 1.50 WHIP) facing Steve Vincent (2-1, 4.12 ERA, 1.02 WHIP). We continued to roll with a 5-2 win and we finally look like the postseason team I know we are.
Paustian was solid, 6.2 innings with a run, walk, 4 strikeouts, and 8 hits. C.J. LaFever allowed a hit and run in the 8th. Chad Scoles got the 9th, recording a save with a perfect frame and strikeout.
Noah Smith was 2-for-3 with a double, walk, and 2 runs scored. Gregorio Alvarenga was 1-for-4 with a steal, run scored, walk, double, and 2 RBI's. Joey Bart was 1-for-1 with a double, run scored, RBI, and 3 walks. Fernando Tatis Jr. was 1-for-5 with a double, run scored, and RBI. Sergio Tello was 1-for-4 with a walk.
April 23rd, 2030: RHP Hunter Green will miss the rest of the year iwth a torn rotator cuff. The Red Sox tossed 7 innings with 3 hits, a run, 2 walks, and 7 strikeouts.
We looked for our second straight sweep with Dursun Erbakan (1-0, 5.75 ERA, 1.43 WHIP) taking on Chris Dorman (1-2, 4.18 ERA, 1.73 WHIP). Former Marlin Jarred Kelenic is making his first stat of the series after coming off the bench the first two games. It was a tight contest, but despite poor pitching from our "Ace", we edged them 8-7.
Erbakan has really struggled, this time allowing 8 hits and 7 runs in 4 innings with a walk and 6 strikeouts. The pen was solid if not unspectactular with 5 innings, 3 hits, 4 walks, and 3 strikeotus. Sam Stewart got the win, LaFever and Hudson holds, and Scoles a save.
Ernie Frye was 3-for-4 with 3 runs, 4 RBI's, a double, rare homer, and a steal. Omari Tetteh was 2-for-3 with a double, run scored, and sac-fly. Jon Reid was 2-for-5 with a run scored. Mac Horvath was 1-for-3 with a walk, RBI, and steal. Rodolfo Solorzano was 1-for-4 with a run scored. Juan Ramirez was 1-for-4 with a solo homer.
Former Marlin prospect Ashton McGee hit three homers in a 10-7 Mets win over the Dodgers.
We look to keep up the streak against the former Nationals, the Montreal Expos, in beautiful Miami! We'll face former #1 Overall Pick Jorge Mota (1-1, 6.59 ERA), Erich Uelmen (0-2, 5.06 ERA), and Logan Allen (1-1, 4.91 ERA).
April 24th, 2030: The Expos visited town with C.J. Jorgensen (1-2, 2.19 ERA, 1.09 WHIP) facing Jorge Mota (1-1, 6.59 ERA, 1.68 WHIP). The pitching was great, and we took the opener 5-1.
Jorgensen went 7 innings with 6 hits, a run, a walk, and 9 strikeouts. Steve Hudson struck out the side with a walk and hit in the 8th.
Fernando Tatis Jr. was 3-for-4 with 3 runs, a double, and a solo homer. Juan Ramirez was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Ernie Frye was 1-for-4 with a run scored, double, and 2 RBI's. Mac Horvath was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Sergio Tello was 1-for-2 with a walk.
Brewer Victor Mederos tossed a 3-hit shutout while striking out 14 in a 5-0 win over the Diamondbacks.
April 25th, 2030: 8 in a row? Pat Saitta (1-1, 9.33 ERA, 1.75 WHIP) looked to make it happen against Erich Uelmen (0-2, 5.06 ERA, 1.41 WHIP). Our streak was snapped, as the visitors edged us 3-2.
Saitta pitched great, 7 innings with 3 hits, a run, a walk, and 5 strikeouts. C.J. LaFever got the loss, although it should be charged to Gregorio Alvarenga, allowing 2 hits and 2 unearned run in the 8th.
Juan Ramirez was 2-for-4 with a run scored, double, and RBI. Alvarenga was 2-for-4 witha run scored and double, but he made a costly error. Jackson Miller was 2-for-4 with an RBI and steal. Jon Reid and Mac Horvath were 1-for-3 with a walk. Ernie Frye was 1-for-4 with a double.
Reds 3B Rafael Devers launched his 500th career homer. The 33-year-old has a career .299/.358/.563 line with 1,476 RBI's and has hit 30 or more homers every year since 2019, with all but four seasons over 40. He has a chance to at least contest Stanton's homer record of 796. Devers ranks 35th All-Time, behind the three way tie of Freddie Freeman, Eddie Murray, and Matt Olson who have 504. He's fourth among active players, behind Cody Bellinger (9th, 618), Bryce Harper (15th, 579), and Joey Gallo (20th, 548)
April 26th, 2030: I optioned Sam Stewart to AAA and activated Juan Toribio from the DL. I also optioned Omari Tetteh and recalled Juan Simental from New Orleans.
We looked to take the finale with Devon Peterson (1-1, 6.75 ERA, 1.75 WHIP) facing Regi Grace, a 31-year-old making his first career start (made 10 relief appearences with Pittsburgh last year). Three in the first and three in the second lead us to a 9-5 series winning finale.
Peterson went 5 with 5 hits, 3 runs, 4 walks, and 4 strikeouts. Joe Kramer allowed 2 hits and 2 runs with 2.2 innings, a walk, and 2 strikeouts. For a 3/3.5, he's been awful (on pace for a laughable -4.6 WAR) and I can't option the former 1st Round Pick...
Juan Simental had a monsterous return to the lineip, 3-for-4 with a steal, solo homer, and three run homer. Fernando Tatis Jr. was 2-for-3 with a walk, run scored, homer, and 5 RBI's. Those two single handedly carried the team. Jon Reid was 1-for-4 with a steal and run scored. Juan Ramirez was 1-for-3 with 2 runs, a steal, and walk.
We get an off day tomorrow before hitting the road for a three game set with the Dodgers in a season full of traveling. And while it seems like we have home-away-home-away all the time, we do eventually have a homestand and road trip, although the alternating series' is kind of annoying.
