May 4th-May 9th
May 4th, 2030: A slight setback for Juan Ramirez, who will miss 4 more days as he clings onto his "Normal" injury proneness. The 27-year-old has already suffered his skills deteriorating with injury after injury, although he's still a clean 5*.
We were in Pittsburgh to open the sseries with Dursun Erbakan (1-0, 6.44 ERA, 1.53 WHIP) taking on the struggling Chris Androff (1-4, 8.37 ERA, 2.07 WHIP). Both teams got 2 in the 9th, and they walked us off 7-6...
If Scoles didn't get hurt changing his stupid tires...
Erbakan had a shaky start, 4.1 innings with 4 hits, 3 runs, 2 walks, and 5 strikeouts. Andy Neidig went 1.2 innings with 2 hits, a run, walk, and 3 strikeouts. Luis Alcantra allowed a hit, run, and walk with a strikeout in 0.2 innings. Juan Toribio got the loss, 0.2 innings with 2 runs, a hit, walk, and strikeout.
Omari Tetteh improved his average to .396, going 3-for-5 with a steal, run scored, and RBI. Rodolfo Solorzano went 2-for-4 with 2 runs, 2 RBI's, a walk, and his first big league home run. Juan Simental was 2-for-5 with a solo homer and 2 runs scored. Jackson Miller was 1-for-2 with 2 walks. Jon Reid was 1-for-3 with a walk and RBI. Mac Horvath was 1-for-4 with a RBI and walk. Gregorio Alvarenga had a pinch hit double. Ernie Frye was 1-for-5 with a double and run scored.
May 5th, 2030: The Cubs will be without RHP Triston McKenzie for the year with shoulder inflammation. He was 1-1 with 10 strikeouts in 10.2 innings, but he carried a high 9.28 ERA.
We looked to get back on track with C.J. Jorgensen (3-2, 1.64 ERA, 0.99 WHIP) looking to stay hot against Jonathan Kearns (1-3, 6.47 ERA, 1.38 WHIP). Despite a rough first, Jorgensen settled in and we took the middle game 6-3.
Jorgensen allowed 3 hits, 3 runs, and 3 walks in 7 innings with 6 strikeouts. C.J. LaFever got a hold and Juan Toribio bounced back from yesterday to get his first save of the year.
Simental stayed hot, going 2-for-4 with a solo homer, walk, double, and 3 runs scored. He's hitting .450 with 7 homers and 10 RBI's in just 9 games. Jon Reid was 2-for-3 with a run scored, RBI, double, and hit by pitch. Noah Smith was 2-for-4 with a run scored, RBI, and steal. Mac Horvath was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Gregorio Alvarenga was 1-for-4 with a run scored. Jorgensen was 1-for-3 with a 2 run single.
May 6th, 2030: Juan Simental was named NL Player of the Week, after going 14-for-32 (.438) with 5 homers and 6 RBI's.
We dropped to 2nd in the Power Rankings as our rough patch lowered our record to 21-11.
The draft pool was announced today, and here's who OSA ranks as the Top 10 available:
1. CF Arturo Caratagena (0.5/3.5)
2. 3B Josh Grube (1/3.5)
3. LHP Kevin Arnold (0.5/3.5)
4. CF Ron Martin (2/3.5): Selected by the Cardinals in the 6th Round in 2027
5. RHP Jonathan Cutrell (3.5/4)
6. RHP Kevin Wyman (2.5/4.5): Selected by the Twins in the 3rd Round in 2027
7. RHP Shamar DeMeritte (2/3.5)
8. RHP Remey Engstrom (1.5/4)
9. 3B Geoff Jalpa (1/4.5): Selected by your's truly in the 1st Round in 2027
10. RHP Nate Simmons (3/4.5): Selected by the Giants in the 6th Round in 2028, and then by the Orioles in the 3rd Round last year.
This pool doesn't suck, but I wish it was better with all the picks at the top I have. My #1 Target is SS Ethan Turlington, a 4.5* from UCLA that the Rangers took in the 26th Round back in 2027. I also like the Florida Natie Jeremy Richards (4), but he's just a borderline starter. There's a few other 3.5* starters, but it's likely my picks aren't going to be as good as I want them to be.
Here's where the rest of my 2027 unsigned guys are:
8th Round: 3B Zach Koford (0.5/0.5): Selected by the Cubs in the 10th Round in 2028
11th Round: CF Joe Housand (2.5/2)
15th Round: 3B Jamari Maith (0.5/0.5)
19th Round: C Jeff Kisling (0.5/0.5)
23rd Round: SP A.J. Dailey (0.5/2): Selected by the Braves in the 17th Round in 2028, released, and then signed with the Cubs
24th Round: SS Juan Tapanes (1/1)
26th Round: 3B Lupe Morales (0.5/2.5)
28th Round: CF Josh Fonseca (0.5/0.5): Selected by the Marlins in the 30th Round in 2029, traded to the Rockies, released, signed with the Mets, released, and then rejoined the Rockies.
34th Round: SP Jorge de los Santos (2/1.5): Selected by the Angels in the 9th Round in 2028
A lot of these guys aren't draft eligible, but Jalpa will definitely be a highly sought after commodity.
Prospect Watch: RHP Mike Butler (A Greensboro):
I thought it'd be fitting to do a 2027 draftee, and Mike Butler has had success to start the season. The 24-year-old was my 7th Round selection as a College Junior from St. Bonaventure. This season with the Grasshoppers, he has a nice 2.89 ERA and 0.96 WHIP with 8 strikeouts and 3 walks in 9.1 innings. A righty reliever with a ton of stamina, he can pitch multiple innings out of the pen if a starter gets booted early in his outing. He's got elite stuff, featuring a 88 rated cutter and plus slider. His cutfastball averages 96-98 and his slider is a hard one that doesn't have the best movement. He does have control issues, but with a little work, the New York native has a spot on a big league pen.
Now, for the finale in Pittsburgh! Pat Saitta (1-1, 6.75 ERA, 1.40 WHIP) will take on the young southpaw Brad Rauter (3-1, 3.79 ERA, 1.40 WHIP) in the rubber match. The loss of Chad Scoles is killing us, and Spencer Jones hit a walk-of solo homer in the 3 run 9th, as we fell 4-3.
Saitta pitched well, 5.1 innings with 2 hits, a run, 3 walks, and 8 strikeouts. Sam Stewart tossed 2.2 innings with a hit and 2 strikeouts in a hold. C.J. LaFever was roughed up in the 9th, 0.1 innings with a hit, 2 runs, and a walk. Ken Adeniran got the loss, allowing the homer to Jones, the only batter he faced.
Noah Smith was 2-for-4 with a double, run scored, and RBI. Ernie Frye was 2-for-4 with a walk, run scored, steal, and RBI. Jon Reid was 1-for-4 with a run scored.
Well, that didn't go as planned, but at least were headed back to Miami to host the incredible 9-24 Doves. We'll see ex-minor league Marlin Michael Baumann (0-2, 6.11 ERA), former Marlin two-way player Roberto Pena (0-2, 9.39 ERA), and Michael Fulmer (0-3, 5.18 ERA).
May 7th, 2030: Arizona and Cincinatti made an early trade, with the Diamondbacks acquiring CF Dave Morgan for RHP Tyrese Comier and CF Sam Prentiss. I like this deal for both teams.
We looked to get thing sback on track with Devon Peterson (2-2, 6.83 ERA, 1.70 WHIP) hosting Michael Baumann (0-2, 6.11 ERA, 1.57 WHIP). You would think this would be an easy win, but the Doves surprised us and won 5-3.
Gregorio Alvarenga left with a strained back, but he won't head to the DL.
Peterson tossed 5.1 innings with 8 hits, 2 runs, 2 walks, and 6 strikeouts. Joe Kramer tossed 1.1 innings, allowing 4 hits, 3 runs, and a strikeout. Oh Joe...
Sergio Tello was 3-for-4 with a homer, double, and 2 RBI's. Ken Adeniran played first base, and went 1-for-4 with a double and run scored.
May 8th, 2030: I sent RF Parker Meadows to the Padres for SS Tommy Whipple.
Whipple, 23, is a 1.5* prospect who's an elite defender at second with a decent bat despite having not much power. He's a former 11th Round Pick.
I'm leaving the spot open for Ramirez, who can be activated tomorrow.
Now tied for first, we looked to turn things around with Steve Paustian (3-3, 3.62 ERA, 1.48 WHIP) taking on Roberto Pena (0-2, 9.39 ERA, 2.87 WHIP). We continued to absolutely suck, and they topped us 5-4...
Paustian went just 4.1 innings with 6 hits, 5 runs, 3 walks, and 5 strikeotus. Steve Hudson tossed 2.1 innings with a hit, 3 walks, and a strikeout.
Gregorio Alvarenga was 3-for-4 with a run scored and double. Juan Simental was 2-for-4 with a run scored and steal. Ernie Frye was 1-for-4 with a run scored and walk. Hudson was 1-for-1 with a triple, run scored, and sac bunt. Mac Horvath was 1-for-4 with a RBI and walk.
May 8th, 2030: We looked to avoid the pathetic sweep with Juan Ramirez back with the club. Dursun Erbakan (1-0, 6.42 ERA, 1.51 WHIP) faced Michael Fulmer (0-3, 5.18 ERA, 1.42 WHIP) in the finale before a needed off day tomorrow. Thankfully, a three run first was all we needed, and we topped the visitors 5-2 to painfully salvage the finale. I thought this was an easy sweep, but boy was I wrong...
Erbakan went just 4.2 innings with 2 hits, a run, 5 walks, and 9 strikeouts. Andy Neidig got the win, 1.1 innings with a hit and 2 strikeouts. C.J. LaFever tossed 2 innings with 2 htis, a run, and 2 strikeouts. Juan Toribio got the save, an inning with 2 strikeouts.
Juan Ramirez was 2-for-4 with a triple, run scored, steal, and 2 RBI's in his return to the lineip. Jon Reid was 2-for-4 with a double, run scored, and RBI. Rogelio Maldonado was 1-for-2 with a run scored, hit by pitch, and walk. Mac Horvath was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Juan Simental was 1-for-4 with a run scored. Rodolfo Solorzano was 1-for-4 with a double nad run scored.
Oakland 1B Peter Alonso was 5-for-5 in an 8-4 loss to the White Sox.
We get tomorrow off and can stay home before the Giants come to town.
