1989 Phillies - Hopefully Better than Reality
I am going to try to write another Dynasty report after my last one fizzled out. I am taking over the Phillies on September 1st of 1989 and will hopefully do better than they did in real life over the next 10-15 years.
BNN reports today that general manager Lee Thomas of the Philadelphia Phillies has been relieved of his duties. Thomas, 53, was hired in June of last year an lasted a little over a year. Before that, he had spent the last 8 seasons as the Director of Player Development for the St. Louis Cardinals, a team which won 3 NL pennants and a World Series during that span. This is the second GM to last less than a year in Philadelphia, but after going 50-82, a change was needed.
The local media welcomed Frank Gatti as the new manger and GM of the Philadelphia Phillies today. The New Jersey native was questioned for several minutes by reporters about his goals and hopes for the club. He spoke about relying on his background in budgeting, statistics and labor negotiations. He spent the 8 years in the Phillies organization, with the last 2 being the Director of Player Development.
Some local media are praising the signing as a good one, while others feel Gatti is in over his head.
