However, in a big game with an enormous crowd the noise might drown out the impact of the ball, then you're screwed, or at least I would be. Thankfully I never had that problem.

You might be right with that, and I know I would not be a good umpire, either, but ... you are trying to defend Angel Hernandez, and Angel Hernandez is indefensible.
Any word on whether he is on the World Series crew? How about as replay ump? THAT would be fun! 50,000 people see a crystal clear overturn case on the video board, and after 19 minutes of agony Amazing Angel sends back a "call stands".
