Walker 1
Taijuan Walker pitched 6 dominant innings, allowing no runs on 4 hits and 0 walks, striking out 8. The Phillies couldn't get anything going all night, and a 3-run 7th was all the D-Backs needed to cruise to victory over the slumping Phillies, who have lost 9 of their last 11 and are in desperate need of a spark. An RBI double by Alex Avila, as well as bases loaded-walks by Jesse Winker and Christian Walker provided the run support needed for a dominant pitching performance all-around by the DBacks. Brandon McCarthy will get the ball for Philadelphia in Game 2.
Leiter Jr. Demoted to AAA
Mark Leiter Jr. has been demoted to AAA after a poor start to the season. The Phillies have not made a corresponding move.

Zack Godley was dominant as he pitched 7 IP of 1 R ball, allowing just 3 hits. Brandon McCarthy continued his disappointing start to the season as he allowed 6 R over 6 IP, not leaving much room for the Phillies' offense to begin with. Arizona delivered the kill shot in the bottom of the 8th with a 3-Run HR by Paul Goldschmidt off of reliever Adam Morgan, which put the D-Backs up 9-1. The most the Phillies could muster was a solo HR by Carlos Santana in the 8th, and so the Phillies look toward a new month and a chance to rebound from losing 10 of 12 to close out April...

The Phillies started the month of May with a vengeance as they looked to avenge their slump in the 2nd half of April, as a 3-run 1st inning was capped by a 2-run double by Rhys Hoskins. The D-Backs came within a run in the 2nd on a 2-run single by Nick Ahmed, but Pedro Florimon gave the Phillies all they would need offensively with a huge 3-run HR in the top of the 3rd. The Phillies would get another insurance run in the top of the 5th on a solo HR by Josh Donaldson. Nick Kingham pitched 7 IP, allowing 5 R, 4 earned, on 6 hits and striking out 2 to earn his first W as a Phillie. Blake Treinen pitched a perfect 8th and Raisel Iglesias shut the door with a 1-2-3 9th inning to get the save, his 3rd of the season. The Phillies will have an off day before hosting the Dodgers to begin a 6-game homestand.
