Prior to 1901 things are a little weird especially if trying to play straight historical without fictional players. From 1901-1912 some teams might have just 16 or 17 players. I would suggest to start around 1915 or later just to get familiar with some of the game basics, then go back to whatever era you prefer. I think modern baseball has to many teams/players to keep up with but that is probably because I am old.
