Oh goodness, I've been doing manager only mode with the first MLB team that gave me a shot (present day Detroit Tigers) and we're not doing well at all. I would love to exchange one of my bench players for almost anyone else in the minor leagues right now since he's both a low work ethic & high greed player but is also hitting below .200 right now and has 7 errors in 30 games at 3rd base (.896 fielding). Oh and he expects to be in the starting lineup every day
Small rant aside, I've never been closer to my players than I am right now by playing manager only mode. Even if these aren't the players that I would choose, I'm enjoying the improbable successes of Luis Tererro and Jarrod Dyson's 20 game hitting streak. We might be 24.5 games out heading into mid-August but this is the most fun losing I've ever had.
