I also had a 3 way playoff problem recently. The first game of the 1982 American East playoffs saw N.Y. beat Toronto. Then N.Y. was scheduled to play my Tigers. That went off correctly, but before the game I received news that Detroit fans were devastated to miss the playoffs. And then I noticed while the game was playing that N.Y. had started a backup pitcher and rested about 2/3 of their other starters as if they had already clinched a playoff spot. So naturally the Tigers won the game but it was a bit anticlimactic, especially as Detroit went on to lose the ALCS to the Rangers. Uninspiring end to a pennant chase that saw 4 teams tied at the top of the division and another 1 game back with only 1 day left in the season. Had never seen anything quite like that before.
