Achievements in the game must be earned by controlling batter by batter. So if you choose to sim the game inning by inning technically the AI is simming and you won't get credit for that. At least that's how I'm interpreting this issue. So if you want to get the achievements you do have to actually manage the game to completion. Hence the value of the achievements since its actually doing it all.
