Pythagorean record and the race to the MGL title
As well as the Brewers have been playing since early June, they still trail the Phoenix Speed Devils by a game. (For a few days, at the very end of July and beginning of August, the teams were in a virtual tie for first place.)
But when one looks at run differential, the Brewers are by far the best team in the WPK. (The Washington Night Train have the best run differential in the SJL- and are in first place- at +106. So the Brewers are more than 100 runs better in terms of run differential than any other team in the big leagues.)
Whether this is comforting or alarming to team officials is a good question. On the one hand, it is a point of concern that the Brewers, especially given the great leadership and off-the-charts team chemistry in the clubhouse, are underachieving by as much as they are. On the other hand, it is clear that the Speed Devils have been over-achieving most of the season and the sense is that there has to be a point where that catches up with them and they suffer a tail-spin.
No matter what, the only thing the Brewers can do is to just keep winning and remind themselves that there is still plenty of season left.
