Walkers news: August 7 -- St. Louis 2, Des Moines
Record: 66-42, 2nd, 2 GA Madison
Andrew Benintendi hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the first and Luis Gohara and four relievers as St. Louis defeated Des Moines 2-1 in a meeting of the top two teams in the National League South at Busch Stadium (1997).
Christian Arroyo singled with one out off Harvesters starting pitcher Dallas Keuchel and Benintendi followed with a 346-foot blast to left field on a 3-2 pitch.
Gohara took plenty of damage allowing eight hits in his five innings, but the only run he gave up was on a Rafael Devers sacrifice fly for the first out of the top of the third inning.
With Billy McKinney still at first base, Gohara struck out Cody Bellinger and got Austin Hays to ground out to limit the damage.
After Gohara departed following the sixth inning, a quartet of reliever -- Chaz Roe (1.1 IP), Jake Diekman (0.2), Keone Kela (1.0) and Grant Dayton (1.0) -- combined to finish the save.
Dayton struck out the side in the ninth for his third save.
