June 12-14, 1973, versus San Francisco

Perhaps a 3-game series at home against the last place team in the league will get things heading in the right direction for the Brewers.

Spoiler alert: yeah, sometimes things really do work out the way it seems they should.

In game 1, the Brewers get the second straight great start from Harry Lyerly. While Lyerly didn't get into double digits with strikeouts as he had in his previous start, he did get his first complete game shutout of the season, scattering 9 hits, striking out 6 and walking just 1. The Brewers offense didn't give him much run support so it's fortunate that he needed almost none. With a 2-0 win, Lyerly improves to 4-3 with a 3.21 ERA. Andrew Kennedy (.332/.366/.436) went 3 for 5 in the victory.

The second game saw another good pitching performance, this time from Erik Sloan, but also much more offense as the Brewers win 10-2. Sloan gave up just 1 run on 4 hits in 8 innings pitched and improves to 7-4 with a 3.50 ERA. Bobby Erbakan (.307/.371/.467) had a good game, going 2 for 4 with 3 RBI and hitting his 4th HR of the season. Mike Foster (256/.297/.335), who hasn't been getting as much playing time lately, had a big game, going 3 for 4 with 2 runs and 2 RBI and hitting his 2nd HR of 1973.

It took 11 innings, but the Brewers get a 6-5 victory in the 3rd game to sweep the series. Bobby Erbakan (.327/.387/.481) collected 5 hits in the game, all singles, and drove in 2 runs. Oscar Vargas (.179/.222/.269) only collected 1 hit in his 6 at-bats, but it was a big one- his 3rd double of the season which drove in Pat Rondeau with the winning run. Rondeau (.383/.398/.474) who has been slumping lately at the plate, scored 3 runs in the game with 2 hits in 6 at-bats and he stole his 9th base of the season. The Brewers got another solid start from Eric Johnson in this one- the young righty did give up 11 hits in 6 innings pitched but only allowed 3 runs while striking out 3 and walking 1. Though he did not get a decision his ERA remains respectable at 3.13. Jordan Stephens got the win and is now 2-1 with a 2.79 ERA.

With the series sweep the Brewers are now alone in 2nd place in the MGL, 1 game behind the Brooklyn Aces.
