Note -- it seems that if you try to submit a bid that equals the "buy it now" price, the game literally chooses to "buy it now". That cost me 1,000 pp. It should have just put in a leading bid, since I never had an intention to outright buy the card at the full price unless I absolutely had to. So if you don't want to outright buy a card, I imagine that you have to be careful to bid just under the "buy it now" price.
