Walkers news: Salary dump -- Inciarte and two prospects go to Toledo
Looking to get under the payroll threshold mandated by management, the St. Louis River Walkers have made a trade with the Toledo Mud Hens
Heading to Toledo are veteran outfielder Ender Inciarte and prospects outfielder Tyler Esplin and starting pitcher Danny Ure.
In exchange, the River Walkers have received third base/shortstop prospect Blaze Alexander.
While Inciarte, Esplin and Ure both have a lot of potential both were seemingly blocked as far as the 2023 was concerned.
-- The 32-year-old Inciarte was looking at being a backup center fielder and right fielder with Byron Buxton and youngster Michael Toglia seemingly entrenched at those positions.
His price tag $15.4 million was deemed too big for that role. The River Walkers will still pay a portion of his salary.
Inciarte is expected to start in center for the Mud Hens. He enjoyed a solid 2022 for St. Louis, batting .292 with three homers and 33 RBIs in 111 games,
-- Esplin was a tough one to give up, but was seemingly blocked as a starter behind Michael Toglia.
Esplin started the 2022 season with the River Walkers and earned April rookie of the month honors but faded to the point to where he was sent to Memphis where he was outperformed by Toglia.
For the season, the 23-year-old Esplin batted .252 with 14 homers and 43 RBIs in 105 games in the majors.
He is expected to start in right field for the Mud Hens.
-- A first-round selection in the 2018 draft, Ure has seen his ratings drop over the past four seasons.
The 22-year-old came into the season with a one-star current rating and just three potential. He did pitch well in a five late season starts in 2022, going 3-0 with a 2.17 ERA.
However, he was not going to break into the rotation this season with Alex Faedo, Argenis Bautista and Brendan Spagnuolo entrenched in the third through fourth spots. There also are a few other pitchers in the minors, who seem poised to move past him.
Ure is expected to start the season in AAA for Toledo.
-- In Alexander, the Walkers received a very good defender at short and third base who has struggled offensive.
In 2022, he batted .246 with eight homers and 34 RBIs at the high-A level.
