Walkers news: April 16 -- Des Moines 7, St. Louis 6, Game 2
Record: 3-3, 4th, 1 GB Des Moines and Quad City
John Lehto drove in Grant Witherspoon with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th inning to give Des Moines a 7-6 win over St. Louis in the second game of a doubleheader at Labatt Park (Montreal).
With the win, Des Moines took the final three games of the four-game series.
Down 6-5 after St. Louis had scored in the top of the 10th on a Nicky Delmonico lead-off homer against Yonnis Chirinos, Witherspoon had led off the bottom of the 10th with a double off River Walkers reliever Phil Maton.
St. Louis was without a left-handed reliever in this game after Brad Hand had been injured in opener of the doubleheader and Jake Brentz was too fatigued after working in that contest.
A Khalil Lee ground out moved Witherspoon to second.
Carlos David Rodriguez followed with a triple to tie it.
With Eduardo Jimenez now on the mound, St. Louis opted to walk sluggers Rafael Devers and Cody Bellinger to load the bases.
But the right-handed Lehto was able to lift a ball into the outfield, bringing home Rodriguez with the game-winning run.
A two-run homer from Rodriguez in the bottom of the first off St. Louis ace Aaron Nola had given the Harvesters an early 2-0 lead.
RBI singles from Edmond Americaan (off Des Moines reliever Jandel Gustave) and Bo Bichette (off Luis Avilan) had put the Walkers ahead 5-4.
But Lee smack a solo homer off Nola to lead off the sixth, tying it again
It would stay that way until Delmonico's solo shot in the 10th.
Harvesters starter Dane Dunning allowed three runs on five hits in 4.2 innings.
Gustave (0.2 IP) and Avilan (0.2) both had short stints on the mound before Luis Vazquez (2.0) and Chirinos both handled a pair of innings to close it out,
Chirinos earned his second win of the season.
St. Louis struck out 16 times in the game, and has whiffed 73 times in just six games.
