September 25-26, 1973, at Brooklyn

With their chances to win the MGL dwindling in spite of some very good play by the Brewers in September, they need a good showing in their 2-game series against the recently hot Brooklyn Aces.

But it was not to be.

In game 1 the Brewers were shut out by up and coming 22-year old Aaron McNally (the 2nd overall pick in the 1969 draft.) Erik Sloan gave the Brewers a solid start- allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 6 hits over 7 innings pitched, with 6 strikeouts and no walks. But the Brewers couldn't get anything going on offense and lost 3-0. The Brewers sloppy defense- 4 errors, including Chad Brown's 37th of the season- certainly didn't help matters. Pat Rondeau (.364/.387/.451) strengthen his batting title chances with a 2 for 4 game.

The Brewers made things interesting at least in the late innings of the second game, but still fall 7-5. After trailing 7-0 going into the 7th inning, the Brewers nearly come back and a 2-out, 2-run homer off the bat of Oscar Vargas (.243/.311/.337), his 3rd of the year, gets them to within 2 runs but Josh Schaeffer then strikes out to end the game. And, for all intents and purposes, the Brewers season. Cheol-han Lee struggles in his last start of 1973 and fails to get to 20 wins as he allowed 6 runs (5 earned) on 11 hits in just 5 innings pitched and falls to 19-8 with a 2.81 ERA. Bobby Erbakan (.347/.403/.474) went 3 for 4 in the loss. Mike Foster (.287/.322/.411) hit his 12th homer of the season. The Brewers continued their error problems on defense as Jonathan Koch committed his 7th error and 3-time gold glove catcher Kevin Curtis committed 2 miscues to raise his 1973 error total to 15. (While the Brewers are 3rd in the MGL in Zone Rating, they are 9th in errors.)

Although they are not exactly mathematically eliminated yet, the Brewers chances to win the MGL this season are now virtually nil. They have 3 games left against the Lords in Baltimore in which they hope to at least get to 95 wins and finish the season respectably, though at this point they almost certainly will have to settle for a 3rd place finish.
