Walkers news: April 25 -- St. Louis 7, Chicago 3
Record: 10-12, 4th, 4 GB Des Moines
Going into the bottom of the ninth inning and down 3-1, St. Louis seemed well on its way to its 11th loss in 13 games.
But the River Walkers sent six runners across the plate -- capped by Rhys Hoskins grand slam -- and managed to come away with a 7-3 win over Chicago at Busch Stadium (1997).
With the win, St. Louis salvaged the finale of the three-game series and ended a three-game losing streak.
The G-Men sent recently signed closer Ken Giles to start the ninth, but he managed just two batters exiting after a one-out walk to Alek Thomas.
James Pazos took his place and he had trouble finding the plate as well.
After retiring Romy Gonzalez for the second out, he allowed a single to J.T. Realmuto.
That was followed by three consecutive walk, the third scoring a run to tie it.
He finally started throwing strikes against Hoskins, but his 3-2 pitch (and ninth pitch of the at bat) was smashed 428 feet over the left-field wall to give the Walkers the victory.
Chicago took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning.
The first run scored on a balk by St. Louis starting pitcher Jimmy Lambert.
The second resulted from an RBI single by Nolan Jones.
That advantage grew to 3-0 in the fifth, when Phil Fitzgerald connected for a lead-off single off Lambert.
Fitzgerald stole second and would scored on a Jarred Kelenic single.
St. Louis ended a 20-inning scoreless streak in the sixth on a RBI single from Jean Carmona off reliever Danny Barnes.
Lambert handled the first five innings for the Walkers, allowing three runs on seven hits.
Four relievers (Thad Ward (1.0 IP), Nick Lodolo (1.1), Phil Maton (1.0) and Brad Hand (0.2)) combined to finish it off, with Hand earning his second win of the season.
