Hierarchy
AAA
players ready for MLB or close to ready sometimes reserve players who are older and backups for your team
AA
Slightly younger players who are sometimes ready for MLB but still developing. While some still develop in AAA this is really more the last phase of development. AAA is more holding backups for MLB. As the years pass you shouldn't have many career minor leaguers here if at all. In the early years of a game it maybe unavoidable until you draft a few times and develop. 3 or 4 more years of service time unless it is a really special prospect who goes up early
A+ or high A (California league, Carolina League, Florida State League)
Younger than AA typically. These guys are more raw and sometimes have potential some are career minor leaguers taking up space. 2 to 6 years of service time
A or low (Midwest, South Atlantic)
Really raw but should have a year or more of time in the minors. First step from half season leagues for promotion of talent. Not much difference from A+, you will notice if the game says they are ready for A+ it will also say they aren't ready for A (scout recommendation up and down arrows) 1 to 5 years service time
A- or short season A/Advanced Rookie (Northwest, New York-Pen, Pioneer, Appalachian)
Second to 4th year prospects who aren't ready for A and advance draftees from college. A- and advanced rookie are about the same. I am not sure the game treats the Pioneer and APP like short A but I do.
Rookie (GCL, AZL)
New draftees and guys with 1 to 3 years service.
So when you draft a guy he will go into a R or short A league. As they progress and build skills they will move to A or A+ depending on how advanced the skills are. When they are getting pretty good but not ready for the majors they move to AA. When MLB ready or close it is AAA.
Honestly, I set A with a one year lower service limit than A+, in reality there isn't a huge difference in how they play. I usually play a team with a A- and a R team and there is a difference there the game recognizes. Teams with an advanced rookie and rookie won't see much difference. I think for my setups in the future I will change Pioneer and Appie to short A instead of rookie to reflect they should be a high league for draftees and inexperienced players.
