don't be afraid to put a rookie in a-ball, either... especially if they are from college.
an 18 year old rated well enough for a-ball i will be less cavalier. he'll start in rookie and be promoted if he blows up and continue to be promoted based on their current ratings until i see a dramatic fall-off (incremental promotions to see if he falters before the level at which a player with his ratings should be).. if he simmers, he stays.. if he falters horribly, he's demoted back to previous level of decent success, if not over-the-top success.
some 18 year old just suck at S-A and higher no matter what their ratings are -- assumes accuracy and has been checked in this context too. Some 18-year olds can get to AAA in the first year of pro-ball. If it happens, let it happen. if they suck incredibly bad after a promotion, and i mean insanely that even considering worst-case scenario volatility, is clearly not ready for that level.
in same respect but less dramatic, some well-rated college prospects can't go to A-ball right away.. but far fewer than what i see with well-rated 18year old and S-A or higher.
age is a factor.. it's not 1:1, but it is a factor. don't hold back a player due to SOP. (standard operating procedures).. .be maleable and take advantage of the guys rocketing to the top... a couple extra useable years is a huge benefit to your team in so many ways. larger windows of opportunities are 100% positive things.
