If it's taking that long, it's not going to finish. Assuming there's nothing wrong with your system (low drive space, for example), try reinstalling the game if it's the standalone version, or if it's Steam, right-click on it in your library and go to properties-local files-Verify Integrity of Game Cache. If something's gone wrong with a data file and that's causing the lockup, that should fix it and you should be able to start a new game.
