Walkers news: April 7 -- St. Louis 5, Quad City 4, 10 innings
Record: 1-0, 1st, 0.5 GA Springfield, Kansas City, Cedar Rapids and Springfield
Vidal Brujan made his first hit as a member of the St. Louis River Walkers a big one, connecting off Quad City reliever John Daley for a 10th-inning double which scored Larry Ernesto with what-proved-to-be the game-winning run in a 5-4 victory at Fenway Park (1970) in the season opener for both teams.
Ernesto had reached on a two-out walk from Daley and then stole second base.
The Thunder made it interesting in the bottom of the 10th against Walkers reliever Danny Grigg.
Carter Kieboom led off with a double before Thomas Dillard struck out.
Andrew Bethea received an intentional walk before being eliminated when Ka'ai Tom hit into a fielder's choice which moved Kieboom to third.
A walk to Jacob Gonzalez loaded the bases.
But Grigg struck out Chase Davis to end it, earning a save.
The win went to Edwin Diaz (1-0), but he didn't deserve it after blowing a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the ninth.
Bethea had greeted Diaz with a lead-off homer.
Duke Kinamon then reached on an error before a walk to Jacob Gonzalez put two runners on board.
After a strike out, Diaz unleashed a wild pitch to put runners at second and third.
Nick Gonzalez took advantage with a sacrifice fly to tie it.
The Walkers had taken the 4-2 lead with a pair of runs in the seventh.
Ernesto drove in the first run with a single off reliever Sarkis Ohanian.
Andrew Benintendi later scored when Thunder first baseman Randolph Thorne booted a grounder hit by Brujan.
St. Louis starter Alex Faedo worked five innings, giving up two runs on six hits.
He was followed to the mound by seven relievers.
Nick Lodolo (1.0 IP) started the march.
He was followed by Tim Hill (0.2), Derek Gordon (0.0), Williams Jerez (0.1), Jake Brentz (1.0), Diaz and Grigg.
