Taking a look at our pitching going into spring training

The first two days were uneventful. There aren't any interesting free agents and no one on waivers yet so going into Spring Training we will have to work with what we have.

Spring Training Potential Starting Pitchers - Craig Swan, Kevin Kobel, Pat Zachry, Pete Falcone, Mike Bruhert, Roy Lee Jackson, Neil Allen, Mike Scott, Juan Berenguer, Tom Hausman, Scot Holman and Jeff Reardon.

Our starting pitching is not going to scare anyone. Craig Swan is the ace but although a solid #3/4 starter is definitely not the next Tom Seaver. Pat Zachry has been solid since coming over in the Tom Seaver trade in 77 and should be our #2 starter. Just like Swan, Zachry would be better off being a back end starter. The rest of the potential rotation would scare no one.
We do have some young talent in Allen, Berenguer, Reardon and Scott so there is some hope for the future.

Spring Training Potential Relief Pitchers - Skip Lockwood, Dale Murray, Kevin Kobel, Wayne Twitchell, Roy Lee Jackson, Ed Glynn, Neil Allen, Dwight Bernard, Jesse Orosco, Bob Apodaca, Bob Myrick, Jeff Reardon

Our bullpen isn't any better than our starting rotation. Skip Lockwood has been our best reliever over the last few seasons. He was very average in 1978. Hopefully, he will have a bounce back season. Lockwood and Bob Myrick are the only returners from the 78 Mets season. Myrick is a lefty that always seems to put up better number than he should. Hopefully, that trend will continue. Bob Apodaca was a solid reliever for the Mets in 1976 and 77 but missed all of 1978 with an injury so I have no idea what we will get from him as he continues his recovery. Before I came in, the old GM tried to overhaul his bullpen bringing in Dale Murray and Wayne Twitchell as free agents. Murray should be an improvement over the departing relievers.
Just like with our starting pitching, we do have some young talent in Allen, Jackson, Orosco and Reardon to give me hope.
