The great Jaime Schardein, two-time Pitcher of the Year and five-time All-Star, was lost for the season today having suffered a torn meniscus in his knee.
At age 40, Schardein has continued to be a valuable hurler with elite control and workhorse stamina and was helping the Oklahoma City Diamond Kings stay in contention in the MGL.
Granted, there are no indications yet that this injury will end Schardein's career and while a knee injury can be pretty devastating for a pitcher at least it wasn't an injury involving his throwing arm.
Schardein is eligible for free agency at the end of the season. Will he try to return for 1977 and will any team elect to sign a 41-year old coming off a serious injury?
Stay tuned.
