Harry Oliver

Here is a 6'4 hurler who spent 10 seasons in the Phillies organization. He pitched well enough 59 wins and an 3.81 ERA with an 11-6 effort in AAA in 1964 but never a drop in that hoped for cup of coffee. Unusual in looking in his numbers that Harry was predominately a relief pitcher during his minor league career when relievers would routinely surpass 100 innings, Considering the infamous collapse of Gene Mauch's '64 Phillies , perhaps he could have gleaned a surprisingly effective spot start out of Harry Oliver amid the swoon. Mauch kept sending his diminishing staff and spent starters out on 2 days rest and not once did it work. It didn't help that Phillies management had previously traded lefty Curt Simmons to the eventual World Champion Cardinals. But that's another thread altogether I.E, Steve Carlton ...
