2080 Season (7/12 – 7/14)

Phoenix Suns (50-37, .575, 1st NL West) @ Miami United (48-39, .552, 2nd NL East)
After a couple of years spent playing second fiddle to Los Angeles, Phoenix took the first chair in 2078, held on to it, by 4-games, in 2079, and are doing their level best to repeat that in 2080… but, in a division that houses the Los Angeles Kings and the new-look San Francisco Seals, that may be harder than it looks. The Suns are getting it done with offense – they are either the best of the NL or close to it, depending on who you talk to – and above-average pitching. They get on base (1st), hit for average (1st), score at will (2nd), and have the second-best OPS at .778 as a unit. This isn’t the type of club you can contain, but with a starting rotation that is top-heavy, and with a bullpen that doesn’t look like they’re built for the playoffs, you can outpace them if you get their starters out early enough. That’s what we’ll need to do here – outpace them… and our starting rotation has the gas to do it if they can make their pitches. It’s always interesting to see how clubs come out of the gate in the 2nd half… if we can display something close to the form we had before the all-star break, we’ll be in good shape to do something magical to close out the 2080 campaign.

88 of 162: Jack Sanchez-Flores (7-5, 3.38) @ Kordell Littles (10-4, 2.63)
Win, 5-3
. Kordell pitched 6 shutout innings before giving up 2 runs in the 7th, Dom Crawford, who leads the team in mustache wax, went 2 for 3 with 2 HRs, 4 RBIs, and a walk, and OH HONG hit his 8th HR of the season. Crawford and OH HONG both get 2-out RBIs, we stole four bags (Magmo 2x, and 1 each for Gordon & Manookian), Johnny Dial picked up his 18th save despite giving up a late run in the 9th. Solid win in front of the home crowd here… off on the good foot.

Elsewhere: RF Boogie Barnett, of the San Diego Chargers, went 3 for 4 with 2 dingers, 5 RBIs, including his first GRAND SLAM as a pro during his clubs 9-6 win over the Montreal Alouettes. It’s difficult not to peg this guy as an all-time great in the making… he really has it all – great fielding, great at-bats, and he was born & raised in San Dimas, CA… the world is his oyster. LF Romeo Fernandez, of the Orlando Solar Bears (Jacksonville’s Triple-A club), went 2 for 3 with 2 HRs, 6 RBIs, a walk, and, like Boogie, one of those jacks was a GRAND SLAM – Orlando won the match by a score of 15-3 over the Tulsa Drillers. And, lastly, rounding out the double-jack club for the day, RF Cannon Leatherman, of the San Marcos Supremos, went 2 for 3 with 2 dingers, 2 RBIs, 3 runs, and 2 BBs during his clubs dominant 8-2 win over the Bowling Green Lickers in Bush League action. With the win, San Marcos improved to 49-41 on the year, but are still sitting in 4th place of the BL Justice Division and are 9 games behind the division-leading Mississippi Hound Dogs.

89 of 162: Josh Allen (8-6, 4.24) @ Harvey Allen (8-5, 2.83)
Win, 2-0
. Whoa (visualize Keanu as “Ted” Theodore Logan)… we shut out, arguably, the best offense in the National League… by committee. 4 innings from Harvey, 3 innings from the “not-so-wild thing” Hunter Vaughn, a couple of batters for Ardolph (K’d them both), and save #19 for DialManookian went 4 for 4 with an RBI, Bill Gordon drove the other run in, and we get the hard-fought victory despite OH HONG, Anaconda, and Crawford combining for a 0 for 10 day (with 4 K’s). Listen, I don’t know what’s going on here – we really had no business winning this one, but we’ll take it – because, that’s what you do. You take the good. You take the bad. You take them both and there you have…

Elsewhere: My precious, Frodo Gonzales, of the Seattle Sounders, went 5 for 6 with 2 RBIs in Seattle’s 10-3 victory over the Chicago Fire… he hit one two-bagger and four singles for the game. In the same contest, Parker put a two-bagger on the board of his own, and Aitor Cubas went 1 for 3 with 2 RBIs. With the win, Seattle improves to 42-48 on the year – I honestly have no idea why they aren’t having a better season considering their lineup. Also, Chicago traded Josiah Kawka to the Denver Miners for a couple of minor leaguers in a move that makes ZERO sense. For Chicago, I mean. Denver needs pitching, and they got it for cheap. H/T to Shawna, I guess.

90 of 162: Robert Hawkins (6-8, 4.54) @ Murray Wagner (5-4, 5.40)
Win, 5-3
. Sweep! Over the top club in the NL West! We are basically a lock to win the Championship now, right? Wagner went a strong 8 innings, allowed 3 runs, walked 3, and fanned 4, Magmo went 2 for 4 with an RBI double, and OH HONG drove in his 41st run of the season (on a double – his 9th). Dial picked up his 20th save in this one… we’re the best ever. We’re the most brutal and vicious, and most ruthless champion there's ever been. There's no team can stop us. Los Angeles is a conqueror? No, we’re Alexander, they’re no Alexander. We’re the best ever.

Elsewhere: Angry Eloy, now of the Shreveport Sashimi Samurai, went 3 for 5 with a two-bagger, 2 jacks, 3 riblets, and 3 runs during his clubs 10-5 win over the Tallahassee Tomcats. The Dutch Antillean Donut Eating Champion now has 23 HRs so far this year and is on pace to send 37 balls over the fence (he put 43 of them out last year (24 as a Donnybrook & another 19 as a Hound Dog)). May he play this game forever… one of my favorites in the save.

Notes: Man, we really came out of the gates running hot – 2 games behind the Pittsburgh Franzone’s and picking up steam. The Houston Texans are next on the docket, in our building, and, I gotta believe that our turn to sit atop the table will follow… Also, take a gander at some of the statistical leaders in StrangeVerse and our clubhouse view…
