Walkers news: July 5 -- Kansas City 5, St. Louis 1
Record: 45-34, 1st, 4.5 GA Kansas City, Springfield and Des Moines
Kyle Wright limited St. Louis to one run over the first five innings and five relievers shutout the River Walkers the rest of the way, as Kansas City won 5-1 at Kansas City Municipal Stadium (1969).
The win allowed the Pit Masters to claim the final of the three-game series after dropping the first two.
The lone run Wright allowed came in the top of the second -- JT Schwartz had led off with a double and scored on a Jared Thomas double -- and had tied the game at 1-1.
The Masters grabbed the lead in the bottom of the next half-inning.
Manny Machado and Logan Tanner opened the inning with back-to-back doubles off Walkers starter Steven Brault.
Danny Cushing later scored Tanner with a single.
The Masters went up 4-1 an inning later, Machado connecting for his second double of the game and scoring when Tanner singled.
The final Kansas City run came in the seventh off reliever John Curtiss.
Blaze Jordan led off with a double and he advanced to third and home on groundouts by Carlos Correa and Machado.
Wright (5-6) allowed one run on five hits in his five innings.
Nick Goody recorded the first out of the sixth before exiting with an undisclosed injury.
Mike Tucker got the final two outs of the sixth and the first of the seventh before being driven from the mound by shoulder pain.
Dave Berg completed the seventh and worked a scoreless eighth.
Nick Murdock allowed a single to open the ninth, forcing closer Wade Davis to enter the game.
He struck out the next three batters to earn his 18th save.
