Walkers news: August 2 -- Cedar Rapids 7, St. Louis 1
Record: 56-47, 1st, 2.5 GA Springfield
Jose Leyva and Jerrion Early hit back-to-back homers off St. Louis starting pitcher Jimmy Lambert to turn a 1-0 lead into 5-0 and help propel Cedar Rapids to a 7-1 win at Shibe Park (1949).
The win helped the Golden Grapplers claim a sweep of their three-game series with the River Walkers.
Leyva's homer was of the three-run variety.
Ealy followed with his solo shot off Lambert.
The Grapplers would add single runs in the fifth -- Early with double off Lambert which scored Leyva -- and eighth -- Enrique Bradford and Terrin Vavra with back-to-back doubles off reliever John Curtiss -- to eventually go up 7-1.
Cedar Rapids starting pitcher Andy Harper lasted just 4.1 innings, but allowed just one run on seven hits. He struck out one and walked five.
Four relievers followed him to the mound -- Trevor Bauer (1.0 IP), Zach Schellenger (2.0), Todd Peterson (0.2) and Evan Palmer (1-0) -- as the Walkers didn't score a run the rest of the way.
Bauer (2-4) came out of it with the victory.
