It sounds like people are seeing accurate results in the sims because all of the other variables that made these pitchers garner quality stats are also reflected in OOTP. Put a pitcher with mid-range STU/MOV/CON on a worse team and he won't do as well.

The FIP stat, which shows a pitcher's value without taking his defense into account, will be fairly constant if you move a player to a different team. The only thing I've found that can meaningfully change FIP is the quality of a catcher. Better catcher = better FIP for his pitchers.
I would go with this. I don't know how many of you are old enough to remember Earl Weaver Baseball. That game sparked my love of baseball and all the strategy around it.

In those days, we would have to get our stats out of Baseball Weekly or get Bill James books and manually enter all the statistics for every player, plus our ratings (which we based on a statistics with formulas for Speed, Range, and Arm.). The sim engine (to my understanding) compared the batter's and pitcher's ratings and produced a result. This was then modified by how good your defense was, etc.

I believe that OOTP uses a similar but much more sophisticated system. Even the player"s Team's chemistry, the players' morale, etc., have an effect on the outcomes.

I'm new to OOTP, but I have been simming games since 1986 and I am SOOO glad I found this game. It is really incredible.
