Walkers news: Sept. 28 -- St. Louis 3, Des Moines 2, 10 innings
Record: 92-65, 1st, 6.5 GA Des Moines; NL South clinched
Jean Carmona's single in the top of the 10th inning scored Larry Ernesto with what-proved-to-be the game-winning run as St. Louis downed Des Moines 3-2 to clinch the National League South Division title at Labatt Stadium.
It is the second consecutive NL South title for the River Walkers and their fourth in the last nine season.
Ernesto had led off the 10th by drawing a lead-off walk from Harvesters closer Omar Benitez.
A bunt from Vidal Brujan moved him to second.
Carmona sent him across the plate with a single.
Down 2-1, Des Moines had tied it in the bottom of the seventh.
With one out, Carlos David Rodriguez had been hit by a pitch from St. Loiuis starter Jimmy Lambert.
Williams Jerex relieved and allowed Rodriguez to steal second base before deciding to intentional walk Andrew Foley.
Tyler Callahan followed with a single to load the bases.
Luis Palomo took over on the mound and struck out Garrett Frechette for the second out.
Jake Brentz then got the call, but he didn't come through.
Jackson Miller singled to score Rodriguez and tie the game.
Down 1-0, the Walkers had gone up top with conscutive homers from VIdal and Rhys Hoskins in the sixth off Des Moines starter Ray Spencer.
Lambert worked 6.1 innings, allowing two runs on five hits. He struck out six and walked none.
Jerez took the mound and failed to retire either of the batters he faced.
Palomo got the second out of the seventh and Brentz the third, but not before the Harvesters tied it.
Brentz did pitch a scoreless eighth.
Ricky Cisneros (4-1) kept Des Moines off the board in the ninth, and would earn the win.
Diaz sent the Harvesters down in order in the bottom of the 10th for his 31st save.
