Winter Meetings Start GLB Daily - December 6th, 1969

The hot stove will be blazing for the next few days as Golden League of Baseball's Winter Meetings are set to kick off. Owners, GM's, and other front office personnel will gather while players looking for a new contract will be there with their agents alongside them. Naturally, the press vultures will be on hand to peck at any morsel that smells the least bit enticing. Expect a lot of rumors to go unfounded, but don't be surprised to see a major trade or two go down as well. Agents will be looking to get their players the best possible contract and will be trying to play GM's off of each other to do so. Weak willed GM's will commit more than they should, and astute GM's may walk away with a bargain. The picture of what the coming season will look like is about to get a lot sharper.

Lupe Salas, Nate Stone and Brady Weinstein's agents met with me during Winter Meetings. Stone's agent told me Nate was favoring our offer over 2 other ones he recieved, but Weinstein and Salas' requested I up their cash amounts slightly and remove the option I added that only grants them their money if I play them in the majors during April. I complied to their requests.

Jonathan Ellis and his agent met me in person at a restaurant, and he agreed to terms on my 1 year, $55K offer. "Your offer is exactly what I'm looking for at this stage in my career. My focus is finishing off my career on a high note. The money will be there if I work hard and put together solid numbers. Thank you again for being such a class act."

Before Winter Meetings closed, I met with legendary Milwaukee GM Hector Iracheta to conduct a trade that net us our new starting 2B. He began the conversation by offering ace Dennis Runion for a prospect package that included Juan Sanchez and Sean Jones, but I decided Sanchez and Jones weren't worth a guy that I could hardly afford. The deal ended up much different by the time we were done with it.

New Guy Michael De Luca Is Back At It Again, and Trying Hard to Make The League Take Us Seriously The Fresno Bee - December 8th, 1969

The Baseball News Network is reporting that Fresno and Milwaukee have made a swap with 29-year-old 2B Fernando Nunez, 33-year-old RHP Tom Ramsdell, 21-year-old minor league RF Rogelio Mesa and 22-year-old minor league RHP Rob Reed being shipped to the Admirals and in return the Raisin Bears would get 29-year-old 2B Jonathan Gary, 19-year-old minor league 2B Alejandro Martinez, 23-year-old minor league RF Nick Morrison and 29-year-old RHP Alex Torres.

Fresno general manager Michael De Luca said the two sides were close to a blockbuster trade before agreeing upon a smaller scale transaction.

"This is just a bit of housekeeping compared to what we wanted to do," he said. "I won't name names, but the potential deal we were close to making would have certainly grabbed some headlines."

A source inside the Fresno organization said the two sides might not be done dealing, and another transaction could be in the works.

Fresno will retain a portion of Nunez's remaining contract.

During his career Nunez has hit .267 with 73 hits, 2 home runs, 33 RBIs and scored 23 runs.

For his career Gary has batted .221 and hit 24 home runs.

The centerpiece of the deal on our side, 2B Jonathan Gary is a very cheap but quite talented player. Milwaukee's deep depth chart pushed him down to the starting spot at AAA, where he showed good discipline and great ability to produce extra-base hits. Alejandro Martinez currently isn't anything special, but he may be a solid infield option in the future if he develops well. Morrison should start the year at AAA San Bernardino, but may come off the bench for Fresno if he performs. Alex Torres has an outside chance of joining the starting rotation, but he'll likely play in AAA.

The starting rotation, as it stands: Jonathan Ellis, Nick Kain, Jose Mora, Bobby Long and Alex Martinez.

The surefire starters in our Opening Day lineup: Jonathan Gary (2B), Jorge Rivera (1B), Ryan Hartman (3B), Juan Sanchez (CF), Ricardo Ramirez (RF), Michelangelo Martinez (C).
