Flames goalie takes home monthly hardware
Flames' goalie J-S Giguere (pictured) has taken home his first player of the month award of his young career. The 25yr old netminder is in his 3rd season as the Flames' undisputed starter and has put together a phenomenal year.
For the season thus far, Giguere has 6 shutouts just 20 starts, 15 of them wins. He also boasts a gaudy 1.29GAA and a stingy .947 SV%.
Paul Maurice isn't surprised at Giguere's success. "He's a solid talent. We've got a good team in front of him and he's feeding off of that. Right now we have our best players winning us games. That includes Giguere."
The timing couldn't be better for the Flames' netminder as his contract expires at the end of the season. "Yeah, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't worrying about that a bit." Noted Giguere. "But really I forget about all that stuff and focus on one game at a time."
The Flames are currently enjoying a very successful campaign with a fantastic 16-5-3 record good enough for 2nd in the Western Conference. Giguere's success is matched by Martin St.Louis' breakout start with a team leading 16 goals and 26 points in 24 games and Boyle's 18 points in 24 games.
"A lot of guys on our roster have arrived at the same time." Said Maurice. "Jarome, St.Louis, Drury, and Boyle are all playing at a high level and have put it all together for us. Giguere's numbers are a reflection of that. He's been phenomenal behind them and they're helping him by outplaying the opposition, night in and night out."
The only question now is can Calgary maintain this level of play for the entire year. The 3rd month of the long regular season begins tonight as the Flames host the Detroit Red Wings.
