The front office was a bit blind-sided when long-time head scout Nick Meskill announced following the KCS that he was retiring from the game. Meskill did a fine job for the organization and the feeling was that they were hoping to keep him around for a least a handful more season.
With a need to scramble to find a replacement the front office settled on 49-year old Ulrik Berthelsen, who in spite of never having held a head scout position is thought to have the skills to excel at the job.
