With this year's crop of free agents having filed a handful of days ago team's a starting to land the stars they hope will help propel them to victory next season and beyond.
One of the earliest big signings was completed yesterday by the Philadelphia Mud Hens when they inked a 5-year deal with 30-year old slugging first baseman Luis Gonzales. Gonzales had played his entire career with Washington up to this point and was the 1970 Rookie of the Year. While he has a reputation as a fine hitter (whose power has not yet led to the kind of home run totals that are projected for him) he is not strong defensively (he did win a Gold Glove at first in 1970 but his skills have diminished considerably since then) and has a reputation for selfishness and isn't considered a very likable teammate.
