The late Damaso Garcia

Here is a photo of a somewhat forgotten player from a soon to be long ago franchise. 2 time All Star Damaso Garcia who first played for the Yankees then moved on to a fine 80's career locking down second base for the Toronto Bluejays. He later moved on the Braves and Expos.
In his youth Garcia was a very promising footballer in the Dominican Republic. Playing on the soccer pitch for his country in the 1974 Caribbean games. In 1980 he was a serious rookie of the year candidate, His arguably best season was 1982 when he hit .310 and stole 54 bases with 185 hits and 32 doubles. Garcia did not make the All Star team that season but was chosen back to back in 1984 and '85. At age 34 he battled a malignant brain tumor and though it left him with serious disability he beat a terrible diagnosis and lived for another 29 years. An Expos fan I was thrilled when they picked him up but alas it was his last stop. In later years he ran a baseball camp for children with haemophilia including his son. Rest in peace Damaso Domingo Garcia.
