Week 1, April 10-16, 1977

Brewers record: 2-4 (week and season), 9th place (tie), MGL

April 11-13, versus Charlotte: 5-1, 3-4, 18-3

April 14-16, at Portland: 5-8, 1-2, 5-7.

The Brewers take 2 of 3 in their first home stand of the 1977 season, getting a fine complete game performance from ace Sadahige Kawasaki in game 1, dropping a heart-breaker in a back-and-forth game in the middle match, and blowing out the Sting in the rubber match. Among the many fine hitting performances for the Brewers in game 3, RodRod went 5 for 5 (see below), Bobby Erbakan went 4 for 5, hitting 2 doubles and driving in 3 runs, and rookie Mike Lovett went 4 for 4 with 3 runs scored, 7 RBI, and hit his 2nd double of the young season.

The Brewers then go on the road and get swept by the team many consider most likely to finish in last place in the MGL. Needing just one win to get to 200 for his career, Cheol-han Lee's struggles continue from the last month of the 1976 season. In the first game of the series against Portland, Cheol-han lasts just 4 1/3rd innings, giving up 7 runs on 12 hits. Matt Helm gives the Brewers an excellent 7 innings in the second game, allowing just 1 unearned run on 3 hits, but the Brewers bats go silent and reliever Ben Flynn is tagged with his first loss of the season. And in the final game of the week, Sadahige Kawasaki, having been so sharp on Opening Day, gives up 6 runs on 13 hits over 6 1/3rd innings to fall to 1-1. Former Brewer Ruben Souffront was the POTG with his 4 for 5, 3 runs scored, 2 doubles, and 1 stolen base performance from the lead-off slot for the Wild Things.
