Lovett breaks bone in base running collision

Well, so much for Mike Lovett's rookie season. Off to a good start, though still inexplicably looking for his first big league homer, the power hitting first baseman suffers a broken bone in his elbow while breaking up a potential double play sliding in hard at second base in yesterday's victory against L.A.

Best case scenario is that he could possibly return to action towards the very end of the season but for all intents and purposes he is likely lost to the team for the rest of the 1977 campaign.

With Lovett headed to the 60-day IL, center fielder Joe McPhillips, having spent some time at AAA Chester on a rehab assignment, returns to the club.
