This Week In NABA! Edition 1

by Henry Chadwick, Monday 8th June 2020, 10:01am, Denver

Isn't it strange how All-Star breaks can seem like a lifetime?

This Week In NABA, we look at our first ever All-Star game from Winnipeg, our first ever Amateur Draft from Denver, and set the scene for the race to our first ever Playoffs! That should be enough to get on with, I think...

NABA All-Star Game 2020

The 2nd of June saw the fledgling league head up to Winnipeg, in the great country of Canada, for a showdown between the Pacific Conference (USA West & Mexican leagues) and the Atlantic Conference (USA East & Canadian leagues). A balmy 62F day in the Great North brought with it a vicious 21mph wind in from centre field, and a capacity crowd at Unicorns Ballpark.

The game would go 11 innings before the 10-6 final score saw the Atlantic Conference take the honours in front of their 'home' crowd, and it was Ottawa's left fielder Steve Williams who would grab the spotlight by completing a remarkable 'cycle'; Williams' 11th inning triple book-ended his 3 run homer from the 1st inning, one that looked to have given the AC the win before a bottom of the 9th shock from the PC to take the game to extras; Mario Morin from San Antonio stepped up to the plate with a 2 run deficit, 2 outs in the inning, and 2 runners on-base to swat a line-drive triple to right field, tying things up. The PC then pulled back another deficit of 2 runs in the 10th inning, before Rafael Pabon from Jacksonville led a 5 run bombardment for the AC in the 11th that closed the game out for good. Pabon himself finished with 2 HR & 6 RBI after starting the game on the bench, and may well argue for a few years to come that he deserved MVP honours himself.

NABA Amateur Draft 2020

Baseball fans had an entire three days to take in the stunning All-Star game before team executives headed South to Denver, Colorado to draft the future stars of the league. A first year amateur draft is an unusual thing to experience, especially given the Inaugural Player Draft that led off the league's launch this year, but seeing bright young talent take the stage is never a boring affair. The draft order for Round 1 was determined randomly, and then reversed for Rounds 2-5.

The Puebla Alleycats were lucky enough to receive the No.1 pick, and took American 22 year-old SP Joe Gabriel, College Senior from Tulane, Louisiana. The Omaha Pride came up next, selecting American 22 year-old CF Jimmy Schons, College Junior from Arizona State. The No.3 slot saw the Monterrey Alligators select a much younger prospect, 17 year-old SP Mitch Sussman, a High School Senior from Memphis, Tennessee. There were 5 rounds in total, and the league has plenty of talent stocked for the future!

Elsewhere This Week

The Leon Mountaineers signed their RP Antonio Antonio to a 2 year, $3.8m contract, presumably to ward off interest from.... San Antonio?

Jeremy de Armas can hit a ball well, and now he's shown everyone; the RF from Portland saw his hitting streak come to an end at 27 games. de Armas has a .385 OBP for the season, with 24 RBI & 17 stolen bases to boot.

The Nashville Jammers had some bad injury news, with RP Josh McClannahan being ruled out for 9 months with a torn flexor tendon in his elbow.

The Weekly Power Rankings see new names at both ends! The San Antonio Sultans reach the top spot, having boosted their record to 39-22, while the Salt Lake City Surge find themselves looking up at everyone with a 21-40 mark.

See you all next week, where we'll reveal the new league logo! Take care NABA fans!

(Writer's Note: I'm going to try get this thread moved to the OOTP 21 section )
