In the top of the first, Williams extended his hitting streak to 11 games with an RBI double.
In the bottom of the first, with the bases empty and two out, Wells left the game with a back injury. Ramiro Mendoza took the mound for the Yankees. Later in the inning, Higginson injured his knee going from first to third on a Clark single and had to leave the game. He was replaced by Juan Encarnacion. The Tigers ended up stranding runners at the corners.
In the top of the second, Posada made it 2-0 with an RBI single.
In the bottom of the third, Encarnacion put the Tigers on the board with a sacrifice fly.
After three: New York 2 Detroit 1.
In the bottom of the fourth, Gonzalez put the Tigers in the lead with a 352 foot two-run homer.
In the bottom of the sixth, Graeme Lloyd took the mound for the Yankees. The Tigers loaded the bases with one out. Bako went down on strikes for the second out. Hunter then grounded to first to end the inning.

In the top of the seventh, A J Sager took the mound for the Tigers.
In the bottom of the seventh, Easley, while trying to steal third, scored from second on a Posada throwing error. Randa followed with an RBI single. With a runner on first and one out, Jason Grimsley took the mound for the Yankees.
In the top of the eighth, Posada tried to make up for it with a two-out two-run single that made it a one-run game. With a runner on first and two out, Doug Brocail took the mound for the Tigers.
In the bottom of the eighth, Easley gave the Tigers a big insurance run with a two-out RBI single. Encarnacion followed with a 403 foot two-run homer to seemingly put the game away. Jeff Nelson then took the mound for the Yankees.
In the top of the ninth, the Yankees loaded the bases with one out. Raines brought a run in with a sacrifice fly. With runners at first and second and two down, Brocail struck Curtis out to end the game.
The Tigers got 15 hits in the game and the Yankees committed 3 errors.
Final score: Detroit 8 New York 5.
