How do you explain the start Jacksonville veteran catcher Bryan Wojtach is off to at the plate this season? The man with a career slash line of .238/.318/.390 is hitting .382/.462/.854. And while Wojtach has shown some power in his career, two times hitting more than 20 homers in a season, his 12 thus far this season is leading the SJL and is just one behind prolific slugger Devin Schwisow in all of the WPK.
Don't get me wrong- Wojtach has had some fine years and is a two-time All-Star and fan favorite, but he's never had an offensive stretch like this one. The 5th round draft pick in 1968 out of Glendale College is a solid defender and even when, as seems inevitable, his batting returns to more Wojtach-like levels, he will remain one of the better players at his position in the league.
And hey, maybe he can keep this up for awhile. Given that we don't have to play against him in the regular season, I for one hope he does.
