29 June 2296 - Dwellers Player Loses Game of Chicken, Lives
Vault 81 Dwellers left fielder Chris Van Benschoten is lucky to be alive this afternoon after he decided waiting five minutes for the Vault 81 door to reopen was too long.
While Calvin Whitaker and Bobby De Luca were running some routine checks on the vault's mechanisms, they had to closer the Vault 81 door. Van Benschoten saw that the door was closing when he was still inside the vault. Instead of waiting for the mechanisms to run through their checks, Van Benschoten decided to try to squeeze through the door before it closed. That decision nearly cost him his life, with Whitaker and De Luca thinking it had.
Instead, Van Benschoten made it through but not before one of the large metal gear cog's teeth bashed him in the face, breaking his nose and knocking him unconscious. When Whitaker and De Luca reopened the vault door, they discovered a blood covered but alive Van Benschoten rather than the bloody pancake they expected to find.
Van Benschoten was raced to the Vault 81 clinic where Dwellers owner Dr. Jacob Forsythe was on hand to treat him.
"He'll be hurting for a while, and it will take at least a week for the swelling to go down in his face, so he is definitely out next week," Forsythe said. "He's lucky to be alive right now, so I am sure he'll need more time to reexamine his life, too."
Van Benschoten, who was selected in the 14th round by the Dwellers, has been a steady member of the team from the 8th spot in the lineup. On the season, he is 29 of 101 (.287) with four doubles and eight home runs, which is tied for second on the team behind Erns Gold. He has scored and driven in 19 runs apiece.
"I consider Chris to be one of the smarter players on the team," Forsythe added. "Maybe I need to reconsider that. He certainly was lucky with the dice roll today. That could have been much worse."
Van Benschoten is not expected to play next week, but he should be available to play in Week 15 when the Dwellers host Diamond City.
