July 2296 - News and Notes - July 2-4

Today in the CBO

News and Notes - Reports from around the Commonwealth

by Nat Wright-Kowalski

2 July 2296 - Red, White, and Blue Weekend for the CBO

Despite the Commonwealth being a shell of the former United States of America, this weekend has been a celebration for what Commissioner Nate Howard has called his own "nostalgia."

Howard, as we all know, was alive before the Great War that turned our land into the Wastes we have grown to love and hate. He was also a decorated soldier who served in Operation Anchorage, a war-time occupation by the country China in the United States.

This weekend, as a celebration of the USA's founding 520 years ago on July 4, 1776. This land that we call the Commonwealth was actually one of 13 Commonwealths across the United States. The Boston area was actually part of the New England Commonwealth. And in our own celebration, we are not official, but we have been operating under our own United Commonwealth ever since Howard defrosted from Vault 111.

This weekend, Howard has proposed that ballparks serve the usual refreshments, but he wanted to add a recipe of his own to each of the 12 hosting ballparks' menus. He calls that item a "hot dog." It includes ground brahmin or dog meat set in brahmin intestinal casings and it is put on top of wet-mashed and baked razorgrain made into what he calls "bread." On top of the "dog" he places a softened paste mixture of mashed tarberries, mutfruits, and tatos that he calls "condiments." Howard said his version of the hot dog is not the same as it was in 2077, but it should be a new, tasty treat he hopes will become popular at the ball parks.

Happy Red, White, and Blue Weekend, CBO!

3 July 2296 - Greenzone Ups Hit Streak to 20 Consecutive Games

The hitting streak for The Slog left fielder Po Greenzone now stands at 20 games, but the Ghouls dropped today's contest 11-7 to the Finch Farm Four Leafs. Greenzone went 1-for-4 in the game.

"Things went well for me personally today," he said later. "I got 1 hit and the streak keeps going. But we didn't win the game."

Po Greenzone hit a sac fly in the 1st, struck out in the 3rd, grounded out in the 5th, singled in the 6th and flied out in the 8th.

So far this season Greenzone has put up a .331 batting average with 46 hits, 14 home runs and 40 RBIs.

3 July 2296 - Tarberry Goes 5-for-6

After a 5-hit effort to lead Atom's 12-9 victory over the Jamaica Plain Treasures, center fielder Ed Tarberry told BNN beat writers it had been "a special day."

"It really doesn't matter whether it's sandlot ball, high school or college, two hits in a game is nice," he said. "Three or four is better, but five or more is out of sight. And to do that at the Minutemen League-level is really something special."

The 22-year-old player earned his accolades today at The Treasure Box with a spectacular 5-for-6 game against the Treasures.

Tarberry singled in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, doubled in the 4th, hit an RBI single in the 5th, grounded out in the 7th and hit a two-run single in the 9th.

In 41 games this year Tarberry has posted a .362 average and put up these numbers: 4 home runs, 35 RBIs and 39 runs scored.

3 July 2296 - Mustang Whitewashes Knuckle Punchers

In an outstanding mound performance, Vault 81 Dwellers starter Josh Mustang fired a complete-game shutout against the Shaw HS Knuckle Punchers at McNamara Park today.

Mustang was the key to the Dwellers's 7-0 win. The 31-year-old right-hander was in high spirits on the mount for much of the game, his mood largely undented by the 6 hits and 1 walk he allowed.

"6 hits?" he said with a laugh following the game. "Listen, I'd be happy with a 30-hitter as long as it was a shutout."

In 14 starts this season Mustang has notched a 5-4 record and a 5.60 ERA.

3 July 2296 - 5 Hits for Dwellers' Islander

Bubb Islander did a number on the Knuckle Punchers in the Vault 81 7-0 victory today, and the number was 5. The Dwellers second baseman banged out 5 hits in 5 at-bats at McNamara Park to lead his club past the Shaw HS Knuckle Punchers.

"I felt good in the batter's box today," he said later. "I had confidence in my swing and knew that it was there and that I could get the job done."

4 July 2296 - Levy Has 20-Game Hitting Streak

Mushy Levy continued his streak at Beantown Brewery Stadium today, even as the ballgame did not go his way. The County Crossing right fielder was 2-for-5 in today's contest and now has hit safely in his last 20 games. The Bloodbugs were not as fortunate, losing 8-6 to the Salem Witch Hats.

"Levy was hitting everything we threw at him," said Salem player-coach Josh Historybuff. "He is a tough out. Fortunately, things went our way in the ballgame today and we came away with a win."

Levy grounded out in the 1st, hit an RBI double in the 4th, singled in the 5th, grounded out in the 6th and struck out in the 8th.

Looking at his season stats, Levy has compiled a .318 batting average and a .370 on-base percentage, while hitting 11 home runs and driving in 43 runs.

4 July 2296 - Rogers Goes on Rampage Against Ghouls

All game long, Finch Farm's Ginger Rogers was rattling the walls at Tarberry Field Forever and banging out base hits against the The Slog Ghouls. When the dust finally settled on the diamond, he had a 5-hit day and the Four Leafs had a 13-5 victory.

Speaking with reporters after his standout performance, the 24-year-old center fielder said, "Get 5 hits, win a ballgame, it's nice. I could get used to this."

According to sources inside the organization, Nordhagen Beach will ship 30-year-old RHP Melvin Rude to Abernathy for 23-year-old 2B Danny Haircutter.

4 July 2296 - Vault 81 Dwellers Ship Patterson to Finch Farm

The Vault 81 Dwellers have made a deal sending 32-year-old LHP Zippy Patterson and 16-year-old C Mike Elanora to the Finch Farm Four Leafs for 17-year-old 2B Phil Harmon. Both sides are said to be pleased with the way the trade worked out.

Nordhagen Beach Update:

There was a lot of partying in the Red, White, and Blue Weekend at Nordhagen Beach's Red Rocket Stadium but not a whole lot of celebrating.

The Party Boys dropped all three games at home against the East Boston Prep Assaultrons: 7-5, 9-5, and 12-11.

That makes six straight lost for the Party Boys, dropping them to 16-26 on the season with just 18 games to go.

Game 2 was the biggest heartbreaker of the weekend. The Boys were up 5-0 entering the 7th inning and 5-1 entering the 8th. However, the Assaultrons put up eight runs in the 8th to take the 9-5 win.
