News and Notes - Reports from around the Commonwealth

by Nat Wright-Kowalski

12 July 2296 - Quincy-County Crossing: 4-Player Trade

Quincy and County Crossing have agreed in principle to a trade. The Gunners will send 32-year-old RHP Jeff Rickashaw and 17-year-old 1B Mike McDonie to the Bloodbugs for 24-year-old LF Tyler Braggmann and 17-year-old RHP Rickey Schoolmaster. The deal is expected to be finalized shortly and the clubs will be introducing their new players to the press when the paperwork is complete.

This year Rickashaw, Quincy's 6th-round pick, has compiled a 4-6 mark with a 5.90 ERA in 15 starts. In 26 games as a backup, 20th-round pick McDonie has hit .208 in 24 at bats with an RBI.

Braggmann, the Bloodbugs' 23rd pick, saw limited action. in six games, he was 3 for 7 with a double and a run for a .429 average. Schoolmaster is involved in his second trade. Last month, he was traded from Egret to County Crossing. He has not played this season.

13 July 2296 - Finch Farm-Shaw HS Trade: Pterror for Fitzgerald

The Four Leafs and Knuckle Punchers pulled the trigger on a deal that will see 26-year-old 1B Jared Pterror head to Shaw HS in exchange for 26-year-old RHP Jack Fitzgerald. A source close to Finch Farm officials said "The teams spent long hours coming to the agreement and in the end, both agreed the deal should help both clubs."

Pterror, the 17th round pick of the Egret Scrappers, has not seen action in a regular-season game. He was released by the Scrappers at the start of the season and then signed with Finch Farm.

In April, one day after officially becoming a member of the Four Leafs, Pterror sulked during the game when he did not play, and then got himself attacked by a ghoul, which further delayed his assimilation with the team. Since many teams read the Publick Occurrences report about the incidents of his attitude and the ghoul attack, no other teams were willing to take Pterror through trade or a non-trade agreement. Instead, Pterror sat on the bench for most of the games disinterested in the first-place Four Leafs' success.

The Four Leafs get a player in Fitzgerald who has not been successful but can be a contributor in certain circumstances. In four appearances for the Knuckle Punchers, Fitzgerald pitched 6.2 innings, allowing seven earned runs on eight hits with seven walks and three strikeouts for a 9.45 ERA.

13 July 2296 - Players of the Week

BL - BL Names Top Player of the Week: It can be difficult for a young player to step out of the shadows and assert himself in the Brotherhood League, but last week Sean Samuels of the East Boston Prep Assaultrons reminded everyone just why he's here as he threw up numbers that made him an easy selection for Player of the Week. Samuels rocked opposing pitching for a .714 average (10-for-14), 1 home run and 5 RBIs to come away with the award.

So far this year Samuels is batting .401 with 6 home runs, 35 RBIs and 48 runs scored.

IL - IL Awards Player of the Week Trophy: So far in his young career, Glenn Higinbotham has kept a low profile, but after his performance at the plate last week, he attracted the notice of the rest of the Institute League in a big way as he was named the Player of the Week today for his efforts.

ML - Assman Wins ML Honor: One of the league's most exciting young players, Bryan Assman of the Goodneighbor Hancocks earned himself Minutemen League Player of the Week honors with a standout performance in last week's games.

For the week the 18-year-old first baseman had a lofty .636 average (7-for-11), collecting 2 home runs, 10 RBIs and 5 runs scored.

In this current campaign, Assman is hitting at a .362 clip with 8 home runs and 49 RBIs.

RL - Great Week for Shaw HS's Damani Beebe: Damani Beebe burst onto the Railroad League stage in a big way last week. This promising 6th-round right fielder for Shaw HS garnered everyone's respect by putting up some remarkable numbers and picking up the Player of the Week trophy.
